I love this place! I've been here 4 times in the past three months because the food is fabulous and the service is incredibly warm and charming. Richard's food is spectacular and Dani and Jacqui are lovely and welcoming. Portions are generous and the degustation menu is creative and very good value. I would eat here every week if I could.
Dined there with some Tasmanian visitors - who raved about the quality of the food.....
Try and find something as good as this in the Inner West.
Awesome food, great service, what more is there to add?
Why this place does not get a hat? I have been there three times. First time invited by some foodie friends for a degustation. The whole table was extremely impressed with the quality and the value of the offer. Second time took partner out, I thought the John Dory was the best cooked fish I ate in Sydney in the last five years and to top it off Fig souffle was a great finish to the experience.
Third time we took a couple out and it was consistent with the previous two experiences. Service is always courteous and value is a steal comparing to some famous restaurants in the city while serving much better food.
Booked in here for an anniversary dinner after reading the reviews. Lived up to all expectations. We decided on the degustation menu which is an adhoc selection by the chef of two entrees, two mains, cheese platter and dessert and of course the complimentary consomme to start. This was a delicate ham hock and star anise number served in an expresso cup. Beautifully balanced with subtle yet noted flavours.
The chef indulged us by including the duck dish on request and we are told will take into account specific dietary requests in compiling the degu menu. Some wonderful wines to accompany each course and a marvelous pear and sauternes sorbet before cheese.
Service was informative and relaxed with genial banter adding to the experience.
Will definitely be back to experience new flavours and bring along friends to share in the enjoyment.
We booked a table at 6.30 pm tonight and both of us had the 6 course degustation. While the courses took such a ridiculous amount of time to appear, I was thinking of the service a 2/10 but it doesn't deserve it because the waitress there was extremely nice and kept us entertained to the end. The degustation consisted of amuse boche, 2 entrees, 2 mains, a cheese sampler, sorbet, and a dessert selection - immensely good value for $72 per person.
The restaurant is situated in a small terrace consisting of three levels, with about 4-5 tables on each floor. I think this contributes to the slowness of the delivery as the kitchen is situated on the ground floor. We were the first to arrive and were seated at the top floor, with the waitress jokingly reassuring us that we will not be banished alone for the entire night. We ordered the degustation along with a Peach Bellini and a Champagne Cocktail, both of which was fantastic.
The amuse bouche of roast chicken consomme with thyme arrived swiftyly. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients straight away; this isn't from some pre-made can food. Next came the entree of bouillabaisse with a mussel, a clam and a pipi, which was a bit too salty. I noted this to the waitress after we finished with it, who apologised politely and passed this onto the chef.
The second entree of duck pate with pistachio and cherry and blood orange was good, nicely flavoured. First main was pan fried ocean perch, was which done magnificently (although mine was undercooked, but the texture was fabulous). By this time, it was leaning towards 7.45 pm and other customers began to fill up the restaurant and the time interval between each courses started getting longer from here on.
The second main of aged Angus beef in red wine was a bit rough, but overall cooked well. By the time we finished, my parking ticket for 2 hours had already run out, and I dashed down to pay for another hr, thinking by the dessert would've been served. Bad idea. We waited for the cheese platter for what must have been over 30 minutes. This was annoying. How long does it take to cut a couple slices of cheese up?! I noticed the large table behind us had just started being served bread after 30 minutes of sitting down, which was amusing to say at best.
The cheese platter finally arrived at close to 8.45 pm to our frustration, but the cheese selection was spectacular (we had four), all of which originated from Switzerland or France, each with difference taste and texture. Our pear sorbet arrived at 9.20 pm, which was delicious.
At this point my ticket has expired again, but I was getting too flustered by the delays to renew it. The waitress realised we have been sitting in the restaurant for 3 hours already and offered her apologies and explained they were understaffed tonight, and offered us complementary coffees/tea, which was a nice touch. I'd think if it wasn't offered we would've walked out by now and asked for our bill to have the last dessert excluded.
It was very lucky we didn't as when the dessert platter arrived, it was mind blowing. The selection of a pot of chocolate (which was very rich, couldn't finish), fig cake with mandarin, cheery tart, and caramelised pear with bread(?) and sultanas were the highlight of the degustation. It provided delicate flavours and attention to detail was evident.
When we finally finished, we had spent 3 hrs 30 minutes in the restaurant. I sympathise for those who arrived at 8 pm and also ordered the degustation as they must be eating until close to 12am. A walk past the kitchen revealed only Richard and one assistant chef at work so I realised what they meant by understaffed. But service was professional, the food was excellent and value was fantastic, so I'd give the ridiculous waiting times a once off and will look forward to coming back again.
I was a customer on the night the below reviewer was there with her boorish friends at an adjacent table. It was my third time at A'Mews, and I was more impressed than ever with the food, service and attitude. Believe me, if those individuals had behaved that way at another restaurant, they would have been removed very quickly.
A'Mews takes the time, care and good (friendly and informative) customer service to make it excellent value. I'll "certainly" be back. Oh, and I'm under 40.
What a find. This place was recommended to us and we were delighted. The lady who runs the place was super friendly (without being over-friendly) and more than willing to accommodate our somewhat fussy requests regarding what we would and wouldn't like included in our degustation. Also, the explanation of each wine was thorough, professional and interesting.
This place lacks all pretension yet manages to deliver some astonishingly good quality and good value food. The desserts were outstanding. A'Mews is the sort of place that every 'real foodie' restaurateur should aspire to run.
The food is stunning. However, our table of 4 was told that we needed to stop 'swearing'. The complaint was handled with no sensitivity and no recognition of being prior customers. Our table has never heard a similar compliant. We had spent $400 minimum on the degustation. Perhaps they are keen to favour older clientele. Sadly, that is not where sustainability is until restaurants such as this realise that young keen foodies are the ones to flirt with - they will suffer.
Good to remember also that although the food is great - it isn't tet's and there are plenty other places to favour in Sydney. Sadly thanks to the staff and not to the brilliance of the food. We will NOT be returning (well maybe once we turn 65 we will be back).
Dinner for two last Saturday night was a very pleasant evening. The 6 course degustation menu lived up to expectations providing a range of flavours and foods that had been prepared with great care and attention to detail. The pace of the meal was just about right and we thought that the matching wines were well chosen in terms of complementing the foods. This is a very good restaurant which deserves a return visit.
Went for a romantic meal with my wife last saturday and had a wonderful experience. The food was just excellent, wine list very good and not too expensive and great service. A lovely treat, a fine dining experience without the hefty price tag.
