My partner and I had dinner here on our first night in the Hunter. Definitely good food but not worth the fine dining price and not what I would consider fine dining. Definitely delicious though. Very homey and warm atmosphere as well
Amanda's is a decent place for a casual dinner in the hunter. The service is friendly and vibrant, the building is cute, and the decor is simple country.
I enjoyed a mushroom soup for entry, which was beautiful albeit a little cool, and my boy had the lobster/vege broth, this soup lacked the flavour that we had hoped for.
After an already huge day of eating and drinking we shared a prawn and pancetta pasta and greek salad for mains.... again acceptable, nice, but nothing to get excited about.
For dessert we shared a tiramisu. It was a big serving, and decent tasting, nothing great though. All in all a nice experience though, I would return, probably with friends, rather than a boyfriend, they have a great vegetarian menu as well and I know many of those people.
After stuffing ourselves all day and the previous day with the food and wine around the Hunter Valley, we decided to try and fit a little bit more in and booked here. Was a Wednesday night and pretty busy. I liked the place, was an old country house done up and I thought the service and room was lovely! Candles on tables and fire going.
Food was pretty expensive but nice. Not awesome... but just nice. Had the lamb for main and ate about a 1/4. What was annoying was that they had my fave bottle of wine (from the Hunter!!) for $60 when I had just brought a bottle of it from the winery for $32. Overall was pretty nice.
Not a bad restaurant, just nothing special. The food is average, same as the service. The ambience is safe, but boring. Ok, if you want just an easy meal but I wouldn't recommend for a special occasion.
After reading the first two reviews I wasn't sure what to expect because I too had heard good things about the place. I went there on a weeknight and it wasn't very busy so this may have changed things.
I couldn't fault the place, the service was excellent and so was the food. I had the scallops for an entree which were superb and had the duck for the main and it was the best duck I've eaten and I always have duck if it's on the menu. I didn't try out the desserts so I cannot comment on them, I was quite full after the entree and main.
I live locally and have visited the majority of the restaurants in the vineyards and without doubt I can say this is the best one I've been to so far. I'll be returning here again no question. I don't know if the first two reviewers are just fussy or went there on a bad night but I'd recommend the place to anyone that's visiting the area.
Very disappointing restaurant!!! Had heard many favourable comments from various locals, so decided to patronise this so called fine dining establishment. Service was very ordinary, have actually received better service at local hotels in this area. Waited one and 3/4 hours for main course which were nothing to rave about.
Entrees over priced, especially the entree with salt and pepper squid, it was disgustingly expensive for such a scant serving and was served with very bland satay sauce. Lamb main course that was ordered rare was served medium, chicken dish nice but greasy. Other meals were nice but nothing too exciting. Desserts did look very nice, but we didn't have time to wait for them. Forget the wine list unless you are well off financially, soo over priced. Would not recommend this to others.
We were visiting the Hunter for a few nights and were recommended the restaurant as a really good place to dine. We were greeted by friendly staff that soon turned into extremely incompetent staff.
We started with the venison pie and salt & pepper calamari to share. We were very pleased with the pie but had never seen such poor quality calamari that you couldn't even cut or even try to chew. I spat my portion back into my napkin and we quickly told the staff that it was very unacceptable. The staff offered something else in which we chose the scallops. That was pleasing.
As mains, my husband ordered the confit duck which unfortunatley was Chicken and I ordered the beef fillet which had so much sinew in it, it was uneatable. I had asked for the temp to be medium and I got medium rare. Upon returning my dish and asking them to cook it a bit more, my husband had enough time to finish his meal before my steak returned.
We then watched thr staff linger and chat behind the bar leaving us and the table next to us high and dry for 35 minutes before we even saw the dessert board. By that time we were so frustrated with waiting and having a small baby with us, we decided to leave. How unforunate because we were looking forward to having a dessert.
Being in the hospitality industry, the level of service we received was appalling and they should really look into what is coming out of the kitchen because an eye fillet of $32.50 in value should at least be eatable and tricking guests into believing chicken is duck is outrageous!
By far, we would never return and we will never recommend the place to anyone. Tidy up the game a bit or they'll sink, if you already haven't done so! Disappointed!
Came here for a lunch deal and was very impressed. Wait between courses was not a problem, everything was timed well. Scallops as an entree were to die for and the mains of curry and prawns were just as delightful. Topped off with a mouthwatering chocolate pudding that got fought over. House wine was a below par, but you're in the Hunter, so get a good bottle and bring it along! Would like to try it again.
My meal of scallops wrapped in pancetta, pork with potatoes, asparagus and mustard sauce plus a dessert of orange over pastry was all delicious. Partner had for entree, mushoom with fetta cheese, main beef steak and dessert carmel/banana tart and all very good too. The wait between each course was a bit long at 30/35 mins. The wine, Windsors Edge 2006 Shiraz was disappointing and needs further cellaring if that can help. It was very watery.
I don't know what all the fuss is about. We visited on a Sunday evening and were less than impressed, this place is okay compared to places such as Harrigan's but definitely does not deserve its current rating. I had a pasta dish which was around $30 with chopped up pieces of prawn (to stretch it further). The pasta was fresh but definitely not worth the price tag. For dessert, hot chocolate pudding, it was dry and dull, good service from the waitress but that was about it. Not worth the trip or the money.
