Just got home from eating there tonight actually so thought I'd write while it's fresh in my mind. For a Saturday night it was really quiet which actually made it nice for a comfortable setting. Only a small restaurant with a few tables and a simple tapas menu.
Tapas is traditionally served as a small dish so when I saw the price for each item I was a little surprised (about $16-$18 each). For an adult whose a little peck-ish you probably need at least 2 dishes per person, and if you're like me you'll want an entree as well - which leaves the meal a little bit expensive at the end of the night.
The food was good, not fantastic though and like the comment below regarding the spicy prawns I too found them very bland and basic, and could use a few good chilli's. The calamari was nice though, as were the olives and goats cheese bread. Best part was we bought a bottle of sangria from the bottleshop next door and their waiter added the fruit mix - made for a bit fun.
We might go back one day and order the Paella, sounds tasty but next time I want to try the restaurant next door as the menu sounded interesting.
Terrible. We ordered five dishes and one was nice. The rest were very bland and extremely overpriced. The chicken skewers were tiny with 2 pieces of chicken the size of a ten cent piece on each stick, these are not worth $17.00!
The prawns tasted very bland. When you read that a dish is spicy you actually think you will receive flavour, but somehow they managed not to do this. We will not be going back nor recommending this to other people.
We pre-ordered the Tapas Feast what turned out to be tasty and good quality food served in a perfect sequence to have a nice communicative diner with friends. We were only missing some bread with first olives and dishes. The desserts were okay, but not spectacular.
Having a bottle shop around the corner which closes at nine on a Friday night lets you feel a bit disappointed when you find out that the Mayor de Castillana is the perfect wine for that food and you are half way through the diner and want some more. So prepare yourself better than we did.
Excellent meal for 8 people. We ate like kings and had dessert and it was one of the most reasonable meals I've ever had in Sydney. We asked Alvaro to recommend the tapas and the order they came in and they were superb. 20 dishes for 8 people and desserts. They also make a sangria mix which you can add to the bottle of sangria you buy 2 doors down!!
We have eaten here a few times since its opening a few months ago. We really enjoy eating here. Service is good and friendly. Menu is reasonably static, with blackboard specials adding a bit of variety. It is very reasonably priced - we haven't managed to spend more than $30 a head.
Our favourite is the enchillada which is not always on the menu, but a must have when it is on. Also good are prawns, marinated artichoke, patatas bravas, pippis, chicken pinchos. A good little restaurant with Spanish favourites and a slight South American touch. (Only negative is the slightly small and close tables).
This is our favourite 'little local'. It is quite small only seating about 25 people but the staff are always attentive and welcoming. The food is always fresh and tasty and the specials board adds a little variety for those who frequent Alvaro's. It is great value for money being quite easy to eat your fill and only spend $30 dollars or so per head. It is necessary to book due to its popularity amongst the locals.
