Overview
Taking dining to new heights, Altitude Restaurant is undoubtedly one of Sydney's finest dining hotspots. The award winning Altitude Restaurant offers a truly unique dining experience, talented Chef de Cuisine, Steven Krasicki has created an inspirational modern Australian menu with European influences while Sommelier, Tom Crosby presents an extensive wine cellar. The restaurant occupies a prime position on the 36th floor of the Shangri-La Hotel and enjoys truly exceptional views over Sydney Harbour through 5 metre floor to ceiling windows.
A glass walled Private Dining Room, seating up to 16 guests, is an ideal venue for special occasions. The adjacent Blu Horizon Bar, crowned 'Best Bar of the Year 2007'at the AHA (NSW) Awards, offers a sophisticated and glamorous atmosphere with equally spectacular views.
We were very disappointed with our evening as we had seen good reviews. Firstly, to actually book was difficult as the restaurant kept promising to return calls and confirm and we had to chase them, eventually landing a booking 2 weeks out.
On the night we were seated away from the windows towards the side and in a busy thoroughfare. In order to actually see the view we had to stand and look over the tables of other patrons! Waste of 36 floors! Our table wobbled badly, just another thing you do not expect from a restaurant of this calibre. The service was pleasant. The menu uninspiring.
The noise from the cocktail bar was out of control at times but we may have noticed it more than others as we were alongside the common wall. Not value for money as far as we were concerned.
Ordered the 8 course menu with wines, asked for window seat which we got hopfully because I booked 2 weeks in advance (although they were unable to confirm). Food portions were extemely small. Nick the wine waiter was excellent and took the time to expliain each wine that was served with each meal. View was excellent.
Was asked to vacant table at 8.15 because it had been booked, a bit off setting but we were told beforehand that we had to vacate at 8.15. Restaurant was half full so they could have held off a bit longer, otherwise not a bad experience, would go again for a special occasion.
We went here for our anniversary dinner and it didn't disappoint. It was very enjoyable. The setting is lovely. The only complaint to the ambience was at one point the music from the Blu Horizon bar got a little loud. The Service was great. Very attentive. Did drop off slightly when it got a little busier though.
After hearing rave reviews from a friend, a small group of us booked dinner for a Wednesday and even managed to score a table by the window on a short notice.
With the floor to ceiling windows, the view outside is beautiful and it was a great night out. Our waiter was so friendly and all smiles, it was great service, views along with delicious food. From their complementary bread (mix of blue cheese, sun dried tomato and linseed which we got to try all of) and their entrees and main were all enjoyed by the table. Main portions size were generous and I was too full to have dessert afterwards.
As we booked online, we scored free sparkling wine for everyone and even though we had to give the table back at 8.15, we all had fun and will be back!
Fantastic views, food was great though I could understand why people would consider this expensive (It's very Upmarket-Haute Quisine!). Regardless we got value. Only there was a long wait for the main and this could have been handled better. The good thing is they acknowledged this delay. The table was the only other factor it felt a little unstable/movable and I could see that a glass of water looked unstable. Overall it was a 9/10.
I went to this restaurant for my daughters 21st (7 of us). I wanted to bring cake being her 21st. They wanted to charge $15 per head cakeage. This is outrageous. It's not about the cake; it's about blowing out candles on your 21st birthday. I didn't bring the cake due to the charge. They didn't even offer to make a cake and charge us, or any other alternative.
Obviously they were worried about losing out on their dessert sale. When the bill at the end of the night came to nearly $1000, some how I don't think they were missing out!!! Apart from this food, service and view were fabulous. Because of the fiasco regarding the cake I wouldn't be in a hurry to come back.
I am a big foodie, who enjoys going out to fine dining restaurants. We went to Altitude with not so great expectations, being a hotel restaurant, but was blown away by the amazing food. We did the 7 course epi curious menu with matching wines about a month ago, and had an amazing night. Our waiter that night was superb. My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and she made us feel very welcome. Helen (waiter) introduced herself, explained the menu to us, took an interest in who we were and took the time to ask us our names and addressed us very well, found out that it was our anniversary and then on our dessert plate, had the chef write happy anniversary, a great personal touch.
With each course we had matching wines and our sommelier also came over and introduced herself. Claira (sommelier) would come over with each wine and explain its regions and characteristics which was very enjoyable and also educational. We loved the interaction. With each course the waiters would come and announce the food, and having 7 courses, it was great to be reminded of what you were eating. The bread was amazing, but the food was out of this world. We started off with seared tuna, which was delicious. Being the starter though, it was only small but kept you wanting more. We then had a salmon dish which was just flavoursome. Then next course was a lobster and scallop tortellini which my boyfriend devoured. He even went as far as to eat the jus that he had left on the plate, with the bread, not wanting to miss out on anything.
The next course was swordfish...WOW. By the next course (Beautiful lamb dish) we were starting to feel full. To accompany this dish Claira brought out the red wine. This was the first of the reds for the night. And all the while Helen kept checking up on us, offering us more bread, which was a big mistake cause we just didn't have the will power to say, it's so addictive. We were attempting to take photos of ourselves and she came over and offered to take it for us, then because we didn't have a window table, she told us about the private room and let us have a walk through. My gosh what an amazing view, you feel like your on top of the world.
The last dish was the duck leg which was my favourite. It was so tender and cooked perfectly. The flavours were so beautiful it was like a party in your mouth. When it was time for dessert we were so full and just didn't think we could do it. Then Helen arranged the dessert to have happy anniversary on it and it topped off our night. The dessert was a quince and nougat glace which was just so light and perfect to finish off with and who new quince could be so nice.
We had the best night and also had the pleasure of meeting Steven the chef and got to thank him personally, and also found that he is an ex chef at one of our favourite restaurants, which is no surprise seeing as we loved the food so much. After paying the bill, Claira supplied us with a copy of the epi curious list and the wines that she matched with it. Both Helen and Claira said goodnight and Helen walked us to the door, got our coats and said goodnight again. A beautiful night, one we couldn't forget so we went back again.
We went on a Monday and asked for Helen, the gentleman said that she no longer worked there which is a shame because on that night the service just wasn't the same. Whilst the waiter tried hard, he just seemed run off his feet, and had no time to really interact and make us feel special, and it wasn't even that busy. It was a simple explanation of the menu and once the order was taken we hardly saw him again. Whilst the experience wasn't bad the second time and the food was again amazing, it was missing that extra touch which was given the first time.
I would defiantly recommend this restaurant for the food. It is just beautiful, the services was spot on the first time, and ok the second. It was hard to understand our waiter most times but eventually we got the gist of it. Will be back again for the food.
Awesome place, very relaxed, great view, worth booking early to get a seat by the window. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, great ambience. The food was delicious, worth every penny. It's value for money! I recommend the banana and brandy tart with lavender icecream for dessert. Has a good vegetarian menu. The complimentary stuff was a nice surpirse. All in all, glamorous and comforting atmosphere and fine dining.
PS: The receptionists are a bit snooty and unapproachable. We had to wait for a good 15 minutes to collect the car keys back and make payment for valet parking at 1.30am with absolutely no one around. We were made to wait outside in the cold for a guy to get our car keys back.
