Went to the Almond Bar a few weeks ago. First I have to say the staff were fantastic and it was a groovy little joint but NOT GREAT FOOD and NOT CHEAP and I know Middle Eastern Food. I felt totally ripped off! We had alot of dips which were average some kebabs, 2 fatoush salads to share between 7 which were tiny for the only salads served for the night and a couple of fried dishes.
We were all still hungry the men especially. We got the bill it was $520 between 7. We did have some wine but we are not big drinkers. We couldn't believe it. No seafood included just lots of dips in tiny ramikins. Try Emmas on Liberty or any where in Lakemba and Punchbowl. I know this is the city and you expect to pay more but pleassssse!
Dark and narrow as a cave. Family staff enthusiastic and helpful in describing dishes. Mezze plates a little dear for amount. The spiced goat meat was tough and unpleasant.
Having walked past this place so many times, I finally decided that a group of friends and I would try it out. First up I like the atmosphere and the vibe inside, a tad noisy, but hey, it was a Friday night so that's what it's all about in my book.
The trio of dips we chose to start with were wonderful (the spicy almond dip is to die for, seriously good!!!) as was the haloumi, in fact I would go as far as to say, possibly the best haloumi I've ever had.
On the face of it, we thought the tapas we chose would be equally as good, but it turned out it all kind of tasted the same....like chick peas/hommus. Even the barramundi which sounded delicious on the menu, tasted overwhelmingly of hommus after being smothered in the stuff - possibly to detract from the fact it wasn't properly cooked??
Nevertheless the group had a great night, we raved about the dips long afterwards, and I liked the vibe, and the service I thought was spot on. So I'll probably give it another try sometime down the track. It's a great space in the heart of Darlinghurst providing a different atmosphere to the Darlo Bar or Green Park or some of the other tapas places nearby.
Looks great and has a nice ambience. Found the 'hip' yet very uncomfortable backless chairs, unfortunate, but they are probably necessary given the tiny dining area. Cocktails unusual and delicious. Great service.
But mezze style eating not suited to couples, we found the meal ended up a bit boring as we could only chose a few dishes and then had a lot of the same food to eat. A tad overpriced for example the dips at $20. Dishes added up and final bill was surprisingly high, probably not worth it.
Celebrated Valentine's Day night here earlier this year. It was a lovely experience. We were a little nervous at first as it was very full but almost as soon as we walked in a table walked out so we were lucky and seated immediately. I thought the service was very good. They were friendly and attentive but not intrusive in any way. We had multiple mezza and two of the largest cocktails I have ever seen, diablo tequila I think, quite delicious.
The three different kinds of almonds served in the beginning is really cute, I loved the chilli ones. I thought the food was extremely moorish and the servings were quite large for mezza. Coffee was great and the homemade baklava was very fresh and tasty. While I've paid considerably less for similar dishes in Bankstown this is a chic, beautifully decorated eatery in Darlinghurst so it's going to cost more. At the end of the night I was happy with everything including the bill.
I came here after reading the review on Almond Bar in the Sydney Morning Herald. It was way better than I expected. I'm a connoisseur of Middle Eastern food and must say I was pleasantly surprised at the spices used in Syrian cooking. It's pretty much what a friend told me, it's almost identical to Lebanese but with a twist.
The service and hospitality were charming and all in all it was an excellent experience. The almond pancake with cinnamon & cardimon must be a signature dessert, it is absolutely sensational. Oh and it's great to be able to get a good Middle Eastern coffee made from a good quality bean in a Middle Eastern restaurant.
Looks really nice, love the oriental decor, and the pictures on its website doesn’t do it justice. The food was average and nothing different from any Lebanese restaurant in Newtown or Surry hills, but the prices dose correspond more to Darlinghurst, way over priced both alcohol and food, we were stunned by the bill.
Service was very good till we said the Haloumi was too salty (6 of us thought it was too salty) , the senior staff instead of taking or pretending to take that onboard become argumentative about the saltines of the cheese. At the end it was very obvious that they couldn’t wait to see our backs, cause they had another group waiting outside, I am from Syrian origin and I was very excited to take my friends to a Syrian infused cuisine, but what a disappointment.
Had an impromptu meal here on a Tuesday and had a fabulous experience. A warm and friendly place with attentive service from what I think was the owner. Excellent design touches with colour coordinated menu’s and tableware.
Very impressed in general with the food – every tapas dish was delicious. Some of the best squid I have ever tasted and generally new and different flavouring for the potatoes and haloumi. Overall very good and would definitely recommend.
I had dinner at this restaurant December last year (2007). I was so looking forward to experiencing good Lebanese food in my local area. Also I had a friend in town from Hong Kong who I have known for over 15 years and being a food writer for an international gourmet magazine I really wanted to impress her with Sydney's food culture. To ensure all my restaurant choices would be perfect I visited each prior including Almond Bar.
Being of Lebanese decent myself I examined the menu and booked a table after being shown through the restaurant. When we arrived (on Time) we were left waiting at the door for 11 minutes then a waiter appeared (the restaurant seemed full) and seated us at a low lounge, stating that the tables were all occupied even though we had booked a table nothing could be done unless we waited for an hour and half.
As it was impossible to eat in this location we had no option other than to sit at the bar or leave. His rudeness tainted the whole evening. Given I had made a booking and visited the restaurant to ensure my reservation was in order I see no reason to accept such arrogant service. The food is overpriced and under flavored. I'm upset that my cuisine is once again dished out to Sydney in such a substandard way.
I wanted to go to this restaurant because a friend of mine told me about the designs by Arc8 Projects in relation to the ambience, feel and the fact that I love everything middle eastern including the food!!
I loved the chicken skewers and the wine list was awesome. Great night out with pals and the general feel and designs of the place made me feel like I was in someone's home. There was a really cool huge wooden frame on the wall like something out of a historic middle eastern palace! Go there! Will definitely be back.
