Overview
At Alio enjoying is living. Alio is best described as a restaurant born from passion. Ashley and Tracy Hughes (brother and sister) are serving clean fresh flavours influenced from Southern Italy. Major influences arise from their time spent working at the River Cafe in London and Ashley's travels through Italy.
Alio has a fully licensed cocktail bar for pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks. Anticipate seasonal menu changes, offering boutique wines by the glass and classic cocktails.
Having read some of the reviews here, we were a bit worried that the experience at this restaurant might prove disappointing, but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, and the service, extremely attentive and professional. Admittedly, we did come on a Monday night so the place was quite empty, but I've been to other places where this has not stopped the service from being poor.
The decor was very attractive, and we didn't find the restaurant at all cold like some reviewers have reported. The wait-staff were more than happy to recommend dishes to us and explain to us in great detail everything we wanted to know (my husband and I like to know exactly what to expect before we order). The dishes they recommended were excellent.
I can thorougly recommend the pork belly which was mouth wateringly good, my husband had the gnocchi, they were the size and shape of hockey pucks, so not quite what he had in mind, but still very tasty.
We thought that as far as fine dining restaurants go, this was a very good choice and would definitely come back.
Fabulous. Went with a large group of 24 last saturday night. All 24 were very happy with all of their courses (I don't think I've ever seen that before!). Great value, good service and portion sizes only metres from Cleveland Street. I can personally recommend the Risotto, Pork Belly and the Pana Cotta, I enjoyed all 3. Will be back.
Awful!!! I went with 5 of my friends to celebrate my birthday. 3 of us went for the degustation. 3 opted for a la carte. Our waiter never told us the specials. We happened to hear another waiter telling a couple in his section what they were. The 3 of us that ordered degustation also requested matching wines. The wines were unceremoniously landed in front of us, with not a word as to what they were. I again had to ask.
To add insult to injury, I was made to feel as though I was totally clueless, "How dare I ask what we were drinking!” The jumped up waiter we had, proceeded for the rest of the night to make a HUGE deal about anything he put in front of me. There was also no menu for the degustation. Very much a lucky dip. Felt very much like; "you'll get whatever is not moving from the kitchen". A terrible experience. The 6 of us will never go back.
Arrived at Alio 15 minutes early for an 8 o'clock booking (which they had failed to register through their online form so I had to book a second time by phone). The booking still didn't exist so we had to wait for an hour for a table - essentially waiting for a table to finish although the spiel given indicated that people would be "shuffled around". They did give us complementary olives and grissini while we waited though which was nice but we did have to pay for two drinks from the bar we would not have otherwise got.
When we were seated the food was slow and they had run out of what my boyfriend wanted to order (gnocchi). The amuse bouche of lentil soup was nice. Snail entree was ok but the pasta mains were good I have to say, especially the ravioli with gorgeous nutty pumpkin filling.
Good food and a nice place, some standout nice people working there, especially the barman but I would NOT go back. This business needs some fixing. Get your act together Alio!
Quite a forgettable restaurant experience. We came here to celebrate my in-laws anniversary but I felt that the whole place exuded snobbiness without any reason to be so. Service was slow, the whole restaurant was absolutely freezing inside, the food was so-so and overpriced. Wish we had chosen another place for our special night. Sorry didn't feel any "passion" here. Not coming back.
I came here on my own one night midweek! I've never seen it busy but I think it justifies a bigger crowd. I enjoyed everything but felt like hurrying home due to the sparse atmosphere.
We also visited in 2006, having the special eatability discount degustation menu. It turned out to be really good value (we were stuffed full), decent quality, and an overall enjoyable night in celebration of our 2.5 year anniversary.
I have been here twice now, I am surprised at the comment below, both visits have been a wonderful experience for both food and service. I will continue to dine here from time to time and highly recommend it.
Alio seems to stand for:
Amateurish; lazy; indifferent; ordinary.
Went with my parents for my birthday and was exceedingly disappointed. Some examples: waitstaff did not know what courses comprised the degustation; did not bring wine out until after first course; forgot to bring water; general apathy. Light bulbs blown in the ladies toilet. Pork belly was soggy and tepid.
I appreciate that $65 is bargain basement for a "degustation", but in this case, it definitely isn't worth it. A thimble of pumpkin soup and grissini; a couple of courses of sorbet, a wedge of salmon, two ravioli and two canneloni do not a degustation make!
I would love to have provided my comments to the restaurant directly but of course, no one asked. The ambience is nice, except for the bus-stop like bench seat which is genuinely uncomfortable but in a city with such fabulous and well priced food available on every corner, it is no wonder they need to advertise on this website to stay in business. Never again.
I live quite close to Alio and was intrigued by its almost unnoticeable facade, after reading the reviews I thought I'd try it and was not disappointed one bit. We had the tasting menu and it was simple, uncomplicated, well presented, fresh and delicious. Exactly what I wanted, although some may be disappointed by the 'safety' of the 6 course tasting menu, I adored the unpretentious factor.
The highlight of my meal was the pumpkin ravioli with sage butter and macadamia nuts, it tasted exactly like one I'd had in Venice. Both of the mains were spectacular and I left feeling completely satisfied. My only criticism would be that the decor of the restaurant doesn't match the food, it felt too stark and modern for such simple and elegant dishes.
