Overview
At Alio enjoying is living. Alio is best described as a restaurant born from passion. Ashley and Tracy Hughes (brother and sister) are serving clean fresh flavours influenced from Southern Italy. Major influences arise from their time spent working at the River Cafe in London and Ashley's travels through Italy.
Alio has a fully licensed cocktail bar for pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks. Anticipate seasonal menu changes, offering boutique wines by the glass and classic cocktails.
What can I say, this is a place where you can bring your dustiest bottle from your wine cellar, without stressing about any disappointment with food. It seems that the chef knows only 2 words: fresh and tasty. Thank you for a great evening.
Having been for the degustation at Level 41 and Alio this week, there was a clear winner, Alio. The food was sublime, brilliantly cooked and every course was spot on. They were even kind enough to replace one of the dishes for us with gnocchi, as my dining companion doesn't like salmon. (Which was a shame as the salmon was the absolute highlight.)
The service was a bit shaky, but extremely friendly and there were no pretensions! Add in the great deal from eatability and hey presto! Here's a big time degustation winner. Fantastic.
The ambience was quite good even if the table where we were seated was to close to another one, resulting in not enough space for two people to stand up. The degustation menu that we tried was pretty good but not original (it’s always hard to find something new around Sydney). The pasta dish was really well made in classical southern Italy style. Outstanding focaccia and the beautiful South Australian extra virgin oil. The service was not accurate (it was more a pub service).
Alio is one of my favourite neighbourhood restaurants and I have eaten there on several occasions. I ate there again recently and it wasn't quite as enjoyable. The menu is still excellent. My companion had a pasta dish which was of the usual really high standard. My meal of lamb shanks was ok but the veggies were a bit oily and unpleasant. What really surprised me was the less than attentive service, something that had always been excellent in the past.
The waitress banged dishes down on the table, even slopping parts of the amuse-gueule (a soup) into the saucer and also destroying the arrangement of a mozzarello salad, without so much as a sorry. Her lack of interest in what she was offering us continued throughout the meal and made the whole experience less than satisfying.
Unfortunately, despite all the other pluses of this restaurant, this lousy service will make me think twice before I go back.
Have been here three times now and each time I leave very satisfied. The ambience is wonderful and makes the dining experience very enjoyable. The food is innovative, fresh and always cooked to perfection, making it good value for money and complimented by great service. Although the menu is starting to get a little boring. For a great night out this place doesn't disappoint.
Had been wanting to try this place for ages and it was well worth the wait. The food was just amazing, I think the food served is the best in Surry Hills/ Darlinghurst. I can highly recommend the veal, it was superb.
The service could of been better considering there weren't many people dining. However it was still good, just didn't match the quality of the food.
My wife and I were taken here by our friends for a Christmas treat last year. I found the place to be of a reasonable standard. It ticked most of the Sydney boxes, over designed space, reasonably educated staff, and average wine list filled with overpriced imports.
But hey at the end of the day it’s about the guy in the kitchen and whether or not he knows what he is doing. The simple answer YES, good solid technique, nice finishes, however a little heavy on the oil, to which the floor staff had to go to kitchen to find origin of, yes quality but the oil just added weight to what are essentially well constructed dishes. Our friends paid, lucky us, but I wouldn’t spend my own money there.
I went last Saturday night for dinner with some friends. Had been before and had the degustation and was not disappointed. This time the service was good the food was mostly ok but a couple of things were just rip off. The desserts are way overpriced. They are plain in both presentation and taste and are just average. The drinks are expensive but the charge of $7.00 for corkage I find outrageous. There is the large white plate small food on top syndrome as previous mentioned. Thanks goodness the service is ok.
