Went here for lunch on a tuesday. Ordered some entrees and 2 mains.. considering it was a lunchtime on a working day you would assume that they would realise the time constraints.
After around 20 minutes the entrees arrived after eye contact was made with the waitress on about 5 occasions. These were standard (money bag, chicken satay, fish cake, hoy jo and a curry puff).
About 10 minutes later the mains arrived at which point 40 minutes of our 1 hour lunch break had passed. In the meantime a table which had arrived after us managed to have received their entrees and mains prior to us. One of us ate a pork pad thai which was the $7.50 lunch special which was a fairly big serving and decent for what the place is (thai in a pub)..
I ordered the chicken tofu salad, however, this arrived with no chicken despite the order being repeated to the waitress 3 times to ensure she had heard 'chicken'. Due to the time issues did not bother asking for this to be corrected. Upon eating this it was disgusting, it was essentially reconstituted lemon juice poured over tofu and some lettuce and other vegetables..
On paying to leave I requested to take away my salad as I had barely touched it, however, in not wanting to waste food thought I would take it with me and try and fix it up with some other ingredients. They said they would pack it and bring it back out and on paying I awaited its return. After a short period I followed this up when I was advised by a suddenly smiling waitress that it had been thrown away and that they were sorry.
This incident I guess sums up the entire experience and this definitely is somewhere I would not waste my time or tastebuds in again..
Alice's Thai is on top of the Macquarie Hotel. Went with colleagues for lunch. Entree's were delicious and served quickly. Mains took an hour to arrive however had generous portions and everyone commented that their dish was yummy. Prices were very reasonable.
The service is the worst aspect of this restaurant including that if you want a drink you have to go down the steep staircase and get it yourself. I didn't bother although I certainly had time to get several rounds while we watched the clock for our mains. The very good value food is let down by poor service and no bar at the top of the stairs.
The food here is pretty mediocre, and rather hit and miss. (I can barely taste any chilli in it).. it's such a shame as otherwise this would be a great little resteraunt. It is pretty enough upstairs, and would be a nice restaurant to escape to from the blare of the city.
There is also the option to eat downstairs in the pub. The food is just not worth it though, not with so many other great Thai places just down the road. The service is great, and the lunch deal makes up for the quality of the food by its value. For aound $7 you can get a chicken teriyaki with rice and side salad, which doesn't make for a bad lunch.
