Visited the Alexandria hotel last Wednesday and was very surprised with the quality of food and the service. The beer was poured well and satisfying to the last drop. The schooner glasses are schooner glasses unlike other reports on this site. The wine list is good contains a reasonable selection of reds.
The beer garden is enormous and there is plenty of room to move. We ate with a group of five and enjoyed the salt and pepper squid, the lamb pie, risotto, ravioli (on the small size) and the beef burger. The squid was delicious and I would recommend it to all squid lovers. The prices are reasonable for pub food and the food is well presented.
The Alexandria is a great venue to eat and drink especially out in the beer garden, this venue is an easy walk from Redfern station for those who like a drink.
Update: 27/08/08. I decided to give my local another chance. What a shame, this time the management agreed and gave me a full refund. What was supposed to be the roast pork special was made up of whatever was leftover. Great staff, lovely beer. But I strongly suggest you eat before visiting this bar.
The food here is disappointing. I sent back my rare burger three times and each time it came back with the same limp salad and soggy chips. The schooner glass is not quite a schooner glass so it's a real shame, this is my local.
This is a laid-back casual pub owned by a past Sydney Swans player. It is a great pub to catch a game of any code of football which you can watch from any of the numerous tv screens and tuck into a hearty but cheap meal. I disagree with the below comments regarding poor service and food. I recommend the specials, particularly the lamb pot pie. I'm going back just for it!
The Alex has been my local for many years so its disappointing to see bad reviews and considering the level of consistency I have experienced at the Alex, rather surprising.
If you're after friendly laid back atmosphere, non pretentious service, smiling and helpful staff and simple but tasty food, you can't go past the Alex. I have never tried the nachos (as per below) and would normally not order them in a pub, anyway, but just yesterday had the pie of the day, which was beef and burgandy and served with mash, peas and gravy and my boyfriend had the bangers and mash and we pretty much licked our plates clean!
Also, try the lamb salad, its been good for yonks! Fantastic food! Stick with Pub Favourites and you can rest assured they'll get it right! As for the atmosphere, I truly think this one of the most welcoming, hospitable pubs around. You can always catch a game on one of the many big screens they have set up outside and in and get involved in daily raffles and games!
The Alex is a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon and a little trivia..the owner Harry, is a former Sydney Swan! Enjoy! hope to see you there.
I go here every so often for a quick drink. The service is fine, the beer is an ok price, and they have a massive courtyard. If you have kids (which I don't) you might appreciate the fact that they are permitted in the courtyard (although there are numerous signs up reminding parents to keep an eye on them).
But I have to say that the food here is ridiculously overpriced and the servings are by no means generous. I would not recommend The Alexandria for a nice meal out by any means, or really any kind of meal. It's pub food at restaurant prices. Take note Alexandria Hotel, a garnish does not make a restaurant meal.
The food is better than you get in most pub kitchens, but not as good as the prices would indicate. But the Alex really falls over in two areas. First of all, the beer garden is a waste of what should be a fantastic space. The garden has been concreted over, with as many chairs stuffed into the area as possible, with two cheap, nasty shelters thrown up for good measure.
Second of all, despite a very competent bar manager, the rest of the staff are hopeless, with rudimentary bar and English skills making ordering a drink a frustrating experience. And the place is often understaffed. Should be great, but it is not.
The food is fantastic, much cheaper than a restaurant but almost as good! Standard pub drink prices, bar staff are friendly if a bit vague. Great atmosphere, child and dog friendly with a park right next door for them to play in. A great little pub with a lovely large courtyard area.
We had dinner at the Alexandria Hotel's bistro last night... & it was one of the worst pub meals we've ever had. My girl had the beef nachos. For $14 I was greatly surprised to find it didn't even come with cheese. The (lack of) flavour meant that without the corn chips it was just minced beef with a little sour cream and guacamole.
I had the 'beer battered' fish & chips. For $16 I wound up with a serve of supermarket packet-frozen fries & three of the tiniest, most tasteless, pathetic, pieces of supermarket packet-frozen fish(?), I've ever come across.
The only reason I didn't take these 'meals' back for a refund was the fact that I didn't want to disturb the other patrons by expressing my true feelings to the bistro staff.
Went to the bistro for lunch with some friends. The prices are expensive for the food you get. $17 for bangers and mash, and $15 for the nastiest (and tiniest) nacho's I've ever eaten. I gave my friends a taste and we all agree the mince was stirred in a bottled bolognese sauce. Service was rude and abrupt. Not recommended.
