Excellent Japanese food. My partner and I had the Sushi Sashimi set and the Nabeyaki Udon. The sashimi was very fresh and sweet. The salad was also very fresh (not pre-mixed and soggy like other Japanese places). The Udon was harder than other places, but was still pretty good. The soup had a mushroomy aroma and very crisp and light.
I thought the prices were a bit expensive, but the food was good enough to warrant it.
The food here was excellent. Service was fast, efficient and well mannered considering that all the staff speck limited English. The prices hasn't increased significantly over the last 5 years but we do miss the set menu that they used to have ($25 for a bento box with miso soup and ice-cream!).
Food was lovely, tasted fantastic, well sized, and presentation was impressive.
Was with a group of 7, one of the meals arrived incorrectly, the staff were mostly competent, but the service could improve. We went at lunch time during the weekday so they were busy and the noise overbearing. But great place for great food.
Last night my boyfriend and I went to eat at a Japaneese restaurant just around the corner. I've been walking past the place several times and it doesn't look 'much for the world' from the outside, but they have their menu 'broadcasted' all over the windows and it looks really yummy, so one day we decided to give it a try.
Once inside, we were pretty surprised over all the people and how big the place really is, the friendly, cheerful atmosphere and the quick service. Even better, the food was fantastic! I had a small tuna and samlon sashimi to start with, and the fish was so soft it melted in my mouth. The traditional beef teriyaki I had for main was not in any way traditional as in boring - the beef was prime quality and cut in thick slices and cooked til perfection. Anthony had a 24 piece sashimi plate for 20 dollars (which is was really good value!), and a plate of mixed sushi.
This place is called Akaneya, and seemed to be very popular amongst the Japaneese themselves. Located on King Street, between Kent and Sussex streets, it's a definite recommendation for anyone looking for some good food to fill their tummy with.
I've been coming here for a while for work - lunches and we always have a great time. It's never too crowded to get a table (the restaurant is quite spacious), and the staff are very efficient. At around $10-15 for a sit-down lunch in the CBD, it's ok value if you want an easy place to meet friends. My only complaint would be the lack of set meals with both sushi and hot food which is unusual for restaurants of this type - if you order both, the combined price doesn't seem justified.
My partner and I ate here for our hour lunch last Tuesday. Friends raved about the quality and value of the food and they weren't wrong.
Service was pretty quick. They had amble staff working the room with portable PDA's to take orders which gets sent to the kitchen instantly.
We ordered a lunch box, the curry chicken katsu and an entrée and it cost us just a bit over $40. I recommend getting the lunch box because the servings are massive and you really get a variety.
This place has lots of seating but gets pretty busy I recommend booking a seat in advance if you plan to go with a group of people. Great place without the usual expensive prices you expect to pay for Jap restaurant will be back here again.
