This place really rocks. I have visited hundreds of Indian restaurants all over the world and I can bet that Aj's is one of the finest. The food and the ambiance are as authentic as it gets coupled with the brilliant service this place is definitely not the one to miss. As I was reading the reviews I found two negative comments which I think is hogwash.
Excellent Service. We followed Sanjay's recommendations and were not disapppointed. The food was great and everyone at our table is looking forward to a return visit. Only one criticism, the music could have been somewhat lower in volume.
I have eaten here many times and also bought takeaway a lot. I rate this the best Indian meal for value in the area. The taste is clean and fresh with good variety of choices. Staff have always been polite and friendly. Servings can be a little on the small side.
After reading lot of comments about this restaurant I visited last saturday. In short,
below average meal, reasonable service. I don't think good comments are right about this restaurant.
Came here for my birthday with some friends. I thoroughly enjoyed the expereience. Sanjay was very attentive, giving us suggestions on what to order and making sure we did not order to much naan bread. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone that loves curry! Definitely will be back here in the near future!
Really very delicious and wonderful food. Very few good indian restaurants in Sydney and Aj's is one of them with good customer service. Different and unique taste of punjabi subjiz than other restaurants. Good luck Sanjay and staff. Keep the good work going. I would love to visit Aj's again and again.
My husband and I called in to Aj's for an impromptu meal last night. We have been dining there for some time, thru a number of owners and I must say, last night was the best we've had there.
We had chicken tikka as a entree between us (only a small serve for $7.50) - the chicken was succulent and not too spicy. Then we had malai kofta (cheese dumplings in a cashew sauce), pista mergh chicken (cooked with pistachios), and lamb pudina with various spices, plain rice and plain naan. The food was really delicious, the sauces were really thick and tasty. At around $17.50 per dish we think it's a little steep for indian, but if you can say you enjoyed all the food, it's worth it. We took the leftovers home.
The service is always really good and as fellow reviewers have said, sanjay always takes time out to have a chat, and keeps tabs on his wait staff. We wish him well in the finals of the local awards, he has worked very hard to build the restaurant to where it is. Good luck, sanjay, and we'll definitely be back!
Excellent food! Nice ambience! Great service! Value was quite good. We went there with a group of 11 last night, and it was absolutely fantastic. Their awards they definitely deserve. Excellent restaurant!
Looking at the review statistics for this restaurant, it stood out as having one of the highest averages for Sydney Indian restaurants. It is easy for some restaurants to appear amazing, but you really have to consider the number of reviews it has had along with the quality of each review. I did that, and chose to eat at AJ's to see if the experience was more than just a perception and it is!
I generally write about a restaurant the day after eating there, because you can be more objective than you would normally immediately after the experience. The thing that struck me first was the prices, because after reading many of the reviews I was expecting small portions and Indian cuisine does not justify small servings. I thought the prices were slightly steep but you soon forget that during the mains.
First up, a mixed entree. I was told the samosas were made on the premises and I believe it because they were excellent. The tikka, possibly the best I've had in 15 years. The lamb, lovely. I didn't like the Sabzi Patties though. The curries were chicken tikka masala, requested hot, and a Pudina lamb, along with rice and garlic naans. The owner thought that we wouldn't fit it all in and came to our table recommending one garlic naan over two, very attentive!
I don't often eat seafood out and I have noticed that most of the serving size gripes are about prawn dishes, but the meat dishes were adequately sized because I base an Indian main on being enough for one, and I was right. The chicken tikka masala was hot, just as I had asked. The naan was perfect, the rice too. The lamb, I would definitely have again.
This restaurant truly is worth the money because the quality and flavour of the food, and the excellent attention to service make it a very enjoyable experience. I will be going back to slowly work my way through the menu. The owner has achieved the right formula!
