Went here for dinner. We had the vegetarian banquet. The food was o.k., bordering on "above average", given the quality of some Indian restaurants around Sydney.
Portion sizes were small for mains, given the price charged and the food is overly westernized, with sweet, richer sauces. Typically authentic Indian food does not have that.
On the whole a good experience, service was quite good. Would recommend if you happen to be in the Eastwood area, but don't go out of your way to eat here.

This is our new favourite Indian restaurant. Love the melt in the mouth pudina lamb and the super juicy sizzling chicken entree. There is both more fragrance and more subtlety in the food than in your average Indian joint. The staff here are friendly, courteous and prompt, and I really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the restaurant. A little bit pricey ($50 for 2 not including drinks), but the food and service are certainly superior. Definitely recommended.

I'm a local and enjoy eats n cook everything "food" indian is our fav. Service to us is always fantastic, has been for the past 10 years we are at ryde. Owners are alway accommodating, can be in your face for those who are not familiar with their customs as in other reviews, but they just want to make sure we get the most from the dine in experience.
Food for me is very important, AJ's indian cuisine is great but not the top of my true indian standards. I think like any other indian or thai place they alter meals to accommodate westerners so inturn, tend to be more sweet and less spice and lose all that authenticity. But hey my kids, 3&5 love AJ's and order 1-2 time every month.

After reading so many glowing reviews of this restaurant, my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a go for our anniversary. Whilst we were initially impressed with the food, our experience was quickly overshadowed by the incessant pestering (and borderline rude) service that we received from the senior staff of the restaurant. He came by our table not just once, but Three times to reprimand us on the speed at which we were eating our meal, our inability to finish the entire meal, and our curry to rice ratio (yes, he really did!).
Although seemingly light-hearted in the beginning, these intrusions gradually became ruder and ruder, to the point where he was undeniably patronising and insulting in tone. We certainly felt that it was inappropriate for him to criticise us again and again about things that were clearly beyond his discretion.
Luckily, both my boyfriend and I tried to be good-natured about it, and quickly paid our bill then left. However, we both quietly agree to never go back to the restaurant again.
My advice: If you are happy to be chastised every 10 minutes about the way that you are eating your food, then this place is right for you. But if you are like us and do not enjoy eating, then save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else!

It's easy to why AJ's has such a following. With Indian food gaining a higher profile in Sydney, AJ's is leading the charge.
We visited AJ's with some friends who were regulars, but even still, I'm sure Sanjay would have greeted newcomers just as warmly.
Given the excellent service, and knowledgeable staff, there's really no need to use the menu. After discussing our preferences, Sanjay promised to return with a selection which would make us happy. And make us happy it did.
The seafood curry was a stand-out favourite, delicate yet full flavoured, with excellent quality ingredients. The scallops were inspired, and matched perfectly with the coconut based sauce.
Well worth the visit, and we're looking forward to our return!

Sanjay looked after me and my family and I have been back several times now. He takes the time to explain the dishes and aims to match it with your tastes, including the tastes of the kids. Highly recommended.

I have been a regular at AJ's for over 6 years now and from the greeting at the door, from the design of your menu for the evening, from the flow of the meal, from the matching accompaniment of your wine, every attention to detail is extraordinary at this hidden gem.
It is an absolute delight to eat at a restaurant where exploration of new tastes happens every time with (if you let him) your own specially designed menu or to have the owner jump into the kitchen to cook a simple and delicious meal that he would cook at home.
Sanjay and Neelam make dining at AJ's a combination of the warmth and comfort of eating at their home mixed with the special occasion that eating out should be. Sanjay pays particular attention to how your dishes compliment one another, this isn't 'pushy', it's the sign of a host who cares about the dining experience of his customers and wants to please you as a valued guest.
If only every restaurant I went to was this good, he won't even let you order a taxi because he insists on driving you home. To those who think this may be made up, ask Sanjay to point me (Mitchell) out when you're there, now that I've moved from Sydney, I travel from Berry 3 to 4 times a month to dine at AJ's (including 3 times last week) and I have recommended many friends over the years who have become regulars themselves.
If you're still not sure about AJ's or convinced by my review, think about this, a restaurant with an average score that high with over 120 reviews must be doing something right!

I went to AJs on 23rd july 2011, reading all the reviews, all the way from Mosman to Eastwood. I am very disappointed to say that food was really horrible. 30 minutes after placing the order, the senior staff comes and tell us that they have run out of dhal.
Butter chicken was a bit off and had a peculiar pungent taste. Malia kofta had no malai in it and tasted just bad. Having said that the Papdi Chaat was one of the best I had ever tried in Sydney.
On complaining that the food was not as per my expectations, the senior staff started arguing that the food was prepared by a world class chef and I have no clue of what I am talking about. When it went to that level, I backed off as I had guests with me and didn't want to spoil the rest of my evening. Overall Not Recommended.

The worst Indian food I have ever had in my 15 years in Sydney. The guy that looked like the senior staff didn't know what he was doing and was extremely arrogant. I will never go to this restaurant, not recommended!

Have been to AJ's regularly over the past 5 years. The food is consistently very good and the owner Sanjay is very attentive and helpful and always remembers us (which always creates a good impression). My only quibble is that the menu could be changed a bit more regularly.
