We used to come to this restaurant when it was called Robata BBQ House. I must say, I liked the old interior better, as it had a more intimate, traditional feel. The staff also used to dress in Kimonos etc. The new decorations are a little bland and if you do happen to sit on the "big table" watch out for your knees!
The good news is - the food is still great! It is also very economical. For around about $30 each, seven of us had a 3 course meal with drinks (and were all satisfied). The salads are enormous, and there are a variety of tempura dishes - each excellent. The staff are friendly and the food is served quickly and efficiently. Ajisai is one of the better Japanese restaurants we have experienced.
Went on a rainy sunday night and there was only 1 other table so it was very quiet. The food was very nice and value for money. We ordered the wagyu beef which was delicious and the serving was suprisingly big for the price.
I suggested tonight that we try somewhere new for japanese dinner and my wife responded "Why risk finding another bad japanese restaurant when we know Ajisai is consistently good food, service, value and ambience and usually has one table available."
As you might have guessed we just got back from eating there and of course had a great meal (and I thought I should let you know about it). We have tried every japanese place in the lower north shore and while some may be slightly better in one area Ajisai, as an overall experience, beats them all hands down - we rate it AAA+++
The restaurant is run by Japanese and the food is seriously good. Probably newly opened recently so is not crowded yet. Love the Salmon roll and terriyaki beef very much but haven't tried their wagyu beef yet. Provided the food quality, price is surprisingly not expensive. One thing that I love is that it offers complimentary parking within the shopping arcade so you don't have to have to do time limited parking in council parking opposite the road.
