We went for dinner to this new mexican restaurant last night for a friends birthday. We had both previously visited Mexico and eaten authentic Mexican food. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing and more like tex mex than traditional Mexican the portions are small and very expensive for what you get. The atmosphere was disappointing very loud and made it difficult to have a conversation.

All the drinks including the Sangria are filled with massive amounts of very large cubes of ice, so overall not a good value dining experience. It's a shame we were hoping for a real mexican dining experience. It's expensive for what you're getting. The plus is the quality of service from the staff, they're warm friendly and attentive.

Agave is a great restaurant with authentic Mexican food. I ordered one of the prawn dishes expecting to get 1 or 2 prawns like in most restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised to find a generous serving of extremely fresh and delicious prawns. The ambience is nice, dimly lit with modern Mexican images on the walls. The margaritas are incredible and quite large.

Excellent restaurant. Fantastic atmosphere on a saturday night with a lovely mix of entrees and soft tacos for mains. All washed down with some lovely Mexican beer.

Quite enjoyed the food here. Four of us on a freezing and drizzly Saturday night. Stuff I have never tried before. I loved the flautas. Very tasty. Was a tad annoyed that they kept taking our plates away before everyone had finished as we were trying to taste each others meals. Felt as though we were being rushed out. And the glasses were too big and chunky to drink from, but that's a small thing to complain about. Overall enjoyed it and will happily go back.

Went back and can't say I was thrilled. Table of six and we were stuffed into a corner, even though we had booked almost two weeks out. Food lacked the oomph it had last time. The service while friendly was far too familiar and not nearly as knowledgeable as it had been on our previous visit. They still have those rotten glasses to drink from. And yet again we were rushed out. Was not the best birthday dinner I have had.

I visited the place a few weeks ago and I was really impressed with the atmosphere, they have a Mexican band playing around the tables it was like restaurants in Mexico City I visited years ago! The food is good, they try, at least, to cook Mexican dishes instead of the boring american nacho. I would like to see a little bit more generous portions on my plate as the soup was just divine. Gracias

This is a very sexy place. Good mood lighting, buzzy atmosphere and wonderful fresh mexican food that does't leave you feeling uncomfortably stuffed. I normally share 2 entrees and a main with my partner and this is usually enough food. The sangria is tasty (on the sweet side however) and all the dishes and drinks are served in beautiful new glass/table wear. Give it a go!

Mexican Food in Sydney is not so common, there's the fabulous flying faquita sisters in glebe, the rather fun one on bondi road and a number of mediocre ones. So, I was quite excited about a mexican restaurant opening in my neighbourhood. Let's start with the decor, cozy and charming, they've really done a good job on the design. It's a family restaurant, I gather, with at least a few mexicans running the place and working there to make it authentic.

The drinks menu could be awfully fun. They serve a "mexican flag", 3 shots of tequila, lime juice and a spicy tomato juice, which are meant to be sipped, in turn, not skulled. They also have other tequila, which should be treated like good brandy or whiskey rather than how it is usually viewed as the nightmare stuff of a night of overdrinking.

But to the food. We had a great guacomole, an OK melted cheese thing. I quite liked my spiced lamb, steamed in paper! And my partner liked his pork. The flavours seemed authentic. So, it's a few steps above the usual enchilada-tostada-taco place but still accessible. The fresh tortillas were delicious. I also went on the weekend for brunch. Both my and my pal's orders were very average, and one of the waiters was hilariously (but kind of annoyingly) confused, so I think there's definitely some service issues to work out.

Two different parties of friends have tried it here and found it uneven, I'm wondering if it was the mediocre service that affected their view of the food. But hey, I want to try it again, and am hoping they get better and better.

(Tried it again for dinner, Saturday night, in July. Food is great. Service is good but still a little confused. But my complaint: the noise level was horrible. Agave, please get some of that inexpensive sound insulation stuff to put on that hard ceiling where noise bounces between there and the concrete floors. Way to noisy!)

Finally a restaurant has decided to provide only 100% authentic Mexican food! Forget about burritos, nachos and fajitas, this is the real thing, no bad Tex-Mex immitations. Most of the staff working at the restaurant are Mexican, and it shows in the menu, the decoration and the service. The decoration is modern, but keeping with traditional Mexican features such as Talavera plates on the walls and tin mirrors with hand painted tiles.

The presentation of the food is contemporary and the crockery/glassware very pleasant and appropriate for the venue. Service is friendly, always with a smile and always willing to make a recommendation. The menu features some of Mexican's favourite items that you won't find in other restaurants such as sopes (small tortillas with toppings), fish Veracruz style and Mixiote, a lamb dish with chile marinade cooked "en cartouche" style, as well as the more traditional Mole Poblano (chicken with chile/bitter chocolate sauce).

Many of the menu items are from the state of Puebla, one of the areas with the greatest gastronomical traditions in Mexico. As a native Mexican and a Chef, I cannot recommend enough this outstanding example of Mexican culinary art. My only complain is: please, expand the menu! I would love to see even more of our great dishes featured!

Really enjoyed the food. Some great dishes we've not experienced here before. We ended up having 3 starters between the two of us. Satisfied but not full. $52 with 2 glasses of wine. Fast and friendly service. The flautas were my favourite.
