We came here on a Saturday for our monthly club meeting and all us non locals were very impressed with the hotel. Great friendly decor. We were here at lunch time and the menu is certainly extensive with recommended wine matching.
I had the pub's signature dish; salt and pepper crab which was superb with a touch of chilli. Other recommended dishes were the smoked chicken salad and the red duck curry. Will certainly try to come back.
The meals here are enormous, especially the laksa and the quality is great for pub food. The place has been revamped and is fairly slick inside, plus they have a really nice outdoor courtyard at the back. The staff are friendly but the service was a bit amateur when we were there, we ordered, then a waitress came back to ask again what we'd ordered. Despite telling them twice, one of us got given the wrong dish, and another person's meal didn't turn up until everybody else had finished.
I went with a group for Sunday lunch. No problem finding tables however they were sticky; it had not been cleaned properly. Ordered the meals on one ticket but had to wait 40 minutes between arrivals of 1st meal and last consequently we (10 of us) were all eating at different times.
I ordered and was extremely satisfied with the steak sandwich, Neecy was pleased with her rump however Shultzy and Lucy were not at all happy about their salt and pepper squid and salt and pepper crab which needless to say were the last meals to be delivered - something about an overly strong 'fishy flavour'.
Lucy had a strange look on her face for the rest of the afternoon. I thought it wise not to sit opposite her if you know what I mean. The others at our table had no complaints however I would have expected some explanation and apology for the delay from staff; as none was forthcoming one of the party ('tough' Lil Neecy) found and spoke with the Manager who to his credit did the right thing by providing free meal vouchers and a round of drinks. Good music from the band was the highlight.
Went on a Monday night after a movie. Quiz night was great, more multi-media than the regular quiz we used to go to. Nice staff, the best steak sandwich! A real steak! Had a bit of a look around, the other sections looked good too, not at all empty for a Monday night!
Been going here for the past 2 months since I moved to Glebe from Kingsgrove and I find this pub amazing. The staff are kind and friendly and the cleanliness is top class. Great beer garden and penthouse is mad for a party. Highly recommended.
Haven't been in here since the refurb, and was completely awed by the transformation. Maybe the interiors are a liitle overdone for Glebe, which takes pride in it's grungy/studenty image, the pub wouldn't look out of place in Paddington or Woolarah though. Was there on a quiet, rainy mid-week afternoon recently and couldn't fault the food or the service. Had the Singapore noodles from their "served in under 10 minutes" bar menu and they arrived quickly and were fresh, moderately-priced and well presented.
Full menu looked impressive (though a little pricey for Glebe?). Due to the open plan design of the interior, I found the ambience was a little bleak as it was quiet, one of those places that needs 50 or 60 people to create a little atmosphere, so probably rocks on a Friday night. If you're after a cosy local for a quiet ale, I'd say go elswhere.
Drove past it one day going along Pyrmont Bridge Rd and went back the next time I was in the area. Great food - had the salt and pepper squid which is one of my favourite all time dishes. My friend had the steak sandwich which she said was really good. Awesome beer garden. A comfortable and relaxing place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon.
Have also been avoiding the AB since moving back to Glebe and have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when I went for a meal last week. I had the salt and pepper squid (which was delicious and a huge serving) and my partner got the $22 for 2 courses deal (he enjoyed the Angus beef and the chocolate mousse as a desert).
Great value, tasty meals! I have to say, my favourite thing about AB is that it was non-smoking (except the beer garden). I also liked the fact that you were able to have a conversation in the bar without having to yell over music or other people. Great refurbishment!!!
I avoided the AB for a year or two after moving into the area, but have tried it several times since it underwent a very substantial refurb. They must have dropped a few million on this place, and it shows. A grotty old pub now yuppified!
Food is great, up-market pub grub. A short menu, but what they do is done very well. The salt & pepper squid is simply superb, as is the thai beef salad. The fries are also excellent - I believe that chips/fries are a pub's core business, along with beer. If you cant get those two right, then get out of the business! AB do both very well. Thoroughly recommended.
