Very warm place, which put you in the right mood. We had the olives ascolana while sipping our white wine. Then both picked pasta as main. Cooked just right, it came at the table, smelling the way a real fresh pasta should smell. Lovely ambience, small and cosy. Can't say it is good value, but quality is there.
Great pasta, warm ambience and mood lighting all contribute to a lovely night out. I like the closeness of the other diners on the long communal table; they detract from the frantic service that copes. A little expensive, but the produce and ingredients make up for it.
The food was excellent on both occasions I've dined here although it did take a while to arrive at the table so I would suggest having a snack before going so you don't starve while waiting. It is however well worth the wait.
The service was great, attentive but not intrusive. I'm not a fan of communal tables, not my thing but otherwise a pleasant and high quality dining experience.
The blackboard pasta (yes I know it is made in house) at $34 for an entree sized portion bulked up with mussels still in the shell is a bit much for yet another restaurant that has uncomfortable seating - especially the tables for 2 along the wall. Service good but where was the food? We waited a 35 mins for a cold starter and then another 40 for two plates of pasta!
What a busy, bustling restaurant this is. My husband and I dined here with two friends last month. We were seated towards the back at a table for four, which was a bit squishy but otherwise fine. We shared a gorgonzola salad and the pasta dishes that were ordered - fettuccine, orecchiette and tagliarini - were home made with simple flavours and were delicious.
The desserts looked really nice - tiramasu and a pear dish - but I didn't try any. The service was merely OK, and we had to park on Surrey Street, but apart from that, a good time was had by all.
Absolutely loved it here, very busy and buzzy, we got a table out the back room, lots of people noise. Food was fantastic, very simple tastes and done well. Service was ok, they're obviously very busy and only just have enough staff. At this kind of place I personally don't need lots of waiter attention but I can see how it would seem impersonal. Overall, though, a cracking eatery you should try.
I had read about this restaurant so was very much looking forward to dining here. Fantastic bread arrived promptly with great chilli oil for dunking. Waitress scurried through menu. Ribollita (small serve) was delicious and whetted the appetite. Then the wait. And the wait. Fifty minutes for two pasta dishes and accompanying red cabbage salad. The chicken liver and pancetta orecchiette had no evidence of pancetta and little of chicken livers themselves (only four). It perhaps seems petty to have a gripe about such things, given that more does not necessarily mean better. But the dish did not live up to expectation and was expensive. All up, $120 for one soup, bread, one salad, two pasta and corkage.
As for ambience, not so sure about rubbing elbows with others at a communal table. Did not feel comfortable or relaxed. Prefer a table for two of which they have two (three?) but which are small and appear to be 'afterthoughts' pegged along one wall.
Service? Wine poured, water glasses topped, unobtrusively attentive but somewhat aloof and lacking warmth. Additionally, someone on the floor should have been aware of our situation in relation to the long wait for food before we drew their attention to it. Overall, feel disappointed and a little 'cheated'. Had expected more in most respects so won't be rushing back.
The food at A Tavola is amazing. Nothing was too complicated or fussy, but just strong, delicious flavours. The home made pasta is a real highlight but pretty much everything our large group ate looked fantastic. The ambience is nice - kind of rustic, if a little noisy. Service is OK, but possibly with a clumsy edge. Value is great - food this good can cost a whole lot more in Sydney.
Quite surprised by the previous comments. I am not a fan of communal tables but it was not such a bad experience, surprisingly I did not feel like anyone was listening to our conversation as we were not listening to anyone elses and I did not rub elbows with the person sitting next to me, but we did steal their parmesan bowl.
Our food was delightful, my sister ordered the stracci with the sausages, her husband had the ravioli with quail and duck (simply delicious) I asked to have the gnocchi with the lamb instead of the chicken, nothing was a problem the cute little waitress worked hard to look after us and the Lady maitre d' was extremely efficient and thoughtful. We had 2 entrees, 3 mains 2 bottles of wine and one half bottle of dessert wine, 2 desserts - $300. I will be rushing back soon.
