Went here on a Tuesday night as we were staying in nearby Gerringong and there isn't much open early on in the week.
After the reviews below, I was a bit hesitant, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was very good. Service was okay, but as we said it was a tuesday night and not too busy. Very nice evening out.
Food is very nice even though menu is a bit limited. Great relaxing atmosphere to enjoy. Service is not swift and does not really cater for kids but great for couples with time on your hands. You pay extra for the slow service style but if you have time to enjoy the night sit back and relax.
Ok, first I am a local and secondly I am a foodie. I visited this establishment on a quiet Friday evening for the first time in 3 years after my previous disappointment only to be stunned by it was worse - how did this place ever get a SMH Hat. They have obviously read the reviews on this site about cold food, my tapas plate was the temperature of lavea, my medium rare eye fillet with mild wasabi mash, was well done ruined steak with a "blob" of mash. To be fair I could taste the mild wasabi, which was a total miscalculation of flavours.
My wife opted for two entrees a blue swimmer risotto which was too intense and a pasta dish pretending to be gnocchi with a beef cheek sauce. Both entrees did not come with a pair of binoculars to see them. I am 56 years of age, and admired the enthusiasm of the two pre pubescent waitresses, who were keen to please, they offered me coffee before dessert.
This place is overpriced, overrated and that might have to do with a certain food critic leaving in the town. I can only assume that when rated they hired a chef a 6 week season who knows what quality is. Don't get me started about not being a BYO, except Thursday night and the quality of the wine list. In a word - a Shocker!
I'm confused, how does this restaurant attain only 1 chef’s hat?, The meals are amazing with exquisite presentation and very little waiting time, the ambience of the entire evening was very welcoming and warm (which was appreciated with all the rain).
The service was very well presented, polite and friendly and the value for money was most impressive as I am very particular of where my meat comes from and how it is prepared and I was informed that the lamb I ordered (which was to die for - cheers to the chef) was sourced from the local southern highlands not far from Burradoo.
With an absolute fabulous evening being had by my wife and me, I ask the question again, Only 1 chef’s hat??
While visiting the coast I chanced upon this little gem in Kiama & had the most wonderful evening! The cosy, softly lit ambience gave way to the most sumptuous meal.
My husband enjoyed the bujas( not sure of spelling) followed by the blue eye cod while I had the tapas & the most exquisite eye fillet, that the helpful waitress informed me was sourced directly from the farmer. We then shared a lovely cheese plate. I have to say we enjoyed it all so much that we came back the next morning for breakfast!
By day they seem to be much less formal with a more cafe style than the fine dining experience of the night before, but it was no less enjoyable as our coffee was excellent & our eggs poached to perfection.
I live in the Southern Highlands and find that the drive to Kiama for Dinner is well worth the time and energy. I enjoy the ambience, the sea air and of course Jason's fine food and wine selections. The duck wontons are an original masterpiece of subtle flavours and the sirloin was how I like it, toasted on the outside and rare on the inside. It cut like butter and was complimented with a blue cheese dressing. The chocolate fondu is almost sinful it is so good. Good coffee, which counts for a lot in my book. Nothing better for miles around.
Who awarded this place a chef's hat?? After finishing our main course, we asked to see the dessert menu, only to be told (without any prior warning) that the kitchen had closed and dessert was no longer being served. The food was very average (i.e. average cafe standard) and overpriced for what it was.
Most restaurants in Sydney work very hard to attain or keep a chef's hat. This restaurant isn't anywhere near the same ball park - not in food quality or its service.
I cannot believe this is a one hatted restaurant according to The Good Food Guide. The hat was obviously awarded to them simply because they serve Vittoria coffee (key sponsor of the awards). The service was amateurish, food was cold and bland and my husband felt ill after eating at this establishment.
It was clear we were in trouble early in the night when they couldn’t even get the basics right who serves rocket and parmesan salad with ground parmesan instead of shavings? How can you get something simple so wrong? Did they find this chef at McDonalds? My pork was bland and served lukewarm and the prosciutto wrapped around my prawns looked grey and sickly.
Don't be fooled by the awards. If this is the best the South Coast has to offer they are in serious trouble. I strongly recommend you do not visit this restaurant.
Great food but the place is a wee bit warm and cramped in the summer heat. The wine list looked appealing until we were told that half a dozen choices were no longer available from their wholsealers. How much does it cost to print a new A4 sheet and stick it into a plastic sleeve? Service was friendly and quick and the portions were generous. I'd happily return.
Been to this restaurant many times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and always a good experience. Dinner is terrific on an early weeknight with the service being more attentive. The duck wontons and the lamb are big winners and the chocolate fondant is truely an experience of it's own. Lunch is a casual menu and doesn't compare to the complexity of the night time menu that gave 55 it's chefs hat.
The dinner menu could, in my opinion be changed on a more regular basis as the same items appear time after time (it could be that they are so popular and very yummy as well!!). All in all a terrific dining experience for the sleepy south coast, and definitely value for money. If you are wanting a surprisingly good dining experience you don't need to travel to Sydney to get one of the best meals in the country.
