I ate here last night for the first time. Read all the reviews which were mixed. I thought this place is the best dining experience in the Hills District. If you want garlic bread and boscaiola pasta then don't eat here. This is as close as you will get to a true italian trattoria in Sydney. We let the owner pick the dishes and shared two entrees, two mains and one dessert with a lovely Heggies Chard.
The whitebait on the antipasta plate was the best I've ever had anywhere and the mussels in tomato were divine. Boths the mains were exquisite as was the dessert. The menu changes weekly I'm told so I will be back every week for more dining pleasures. This is truly a place to visit and just sit back and let the owners show you what they can do which is what a trattoria is all about. I felt the value was excellent and the quality of food first rate. Finally somewhere decent to eat in the Hills.
It's hard for us regulars to read reviews that criticise Bannerman. We go to 42 Bannerman weekly and love the place. The food is unbeatable, it's flavoursome, substantial and just like it's homecooked. I love the fact that you're welcomed into the family, it's part of the charm of the place, you feel like you're at home.
The place has a great ambience, it is so rustic, with the wood fire, the slate floors and the Italian opera in the background. We have always found service to be efficient, quick and so friendly. It is actually personable, a change from so many restaurants in the hills.
Value for money is excellent, considering the portion size and the richness of the flavour. We love this place and will continue to be weekly's for a long time to come!
We were not impressed, this restaurant has potential but there are a few things they need to fix first. We were seated in the covered outside area which was cold in the middle of winter.
We were waiting for a menu until they told us no we don't have menus here, 'we can bring out a few dishes for the table to try'. We didn't want a mystery dinner, people have food they don't like and people could have allergies to certain foods. So she said we have a blackboard that you can pick from that changes from night to night. She wouldn't show us the board until everyone arrived and two people were late. They only had 5 pasta or 4 mains to choose from.
And the mains didn't come with vegetables so you had to spend another $6 ontop of the $26 for a main. Once she explained the board an older lady came out an explained it again, and tried to get us to have the dishes for the table, we didn't want that! Then she told us we should have the antipasto, we didn't want that either, then she tried to tell us that this was how real italians ate and that the menu was traditional, she had just insulted half our table as most of us were italian and know what real italian is.
We waited about 45 minutes for our food but we did have a table of 12. Waiting to see the menu and order didn't see our food arrive untill after 9. They brought out the wrong dish for my friend so she had to wait another 15 minute when she was already starving. They cleared away too many glasses and people didn't have water glasses to drink from, the lady was a bit intrusive coming around every 10 minutes to lean across the table collecting dishes and interrupting conversation.
We didn't get the dessert blackboard, (maybe just as well hehe). When we were finished the lady said after saying sorry it took awile for your food 'see I told you you should have had the antipasto' I don't think us spending more money on food to cover their slow service is a good idea. Anyway I had the gnocci with mussles and being italian I can say it was cooked well, but there wasn't enough on the plate, it was tasty possibly a bit more flavour but it was healthy and not oily which was good.
The food saved the place. Their service and menu structure need reviewing and let the customer pick want they want don't force them ' the customer is always right'. I won't be going back.
Having dined here today, I can unquestionably say that my husband and I will be back, and soon. The food is fantastic, it is such a refreshing change to experience authentic, rustic Italian. The concept is ingenious and unlike anything I have experienced in the hills. The concept of a changing menu is fantastic, new things every week. If the food was this good today, I can't wait to see what it's like week by week.
The place has a wonderful atmosphere, it is very literally like being in a family home, being served fresh homecooked meals. It is a quaint and rustic place and doesn't have the ridiculous formalities of restaurants with a similar standard of food. The food is good value, the portion sizes are ever generous and the food evenly and well priced.
The service was absolutely fantastic, we could not have asked for more. The two young waitresses were highly attentive and so friendly. It was refreshing to be greeted by employees with such passion and enthusiasm for their job. The genuine interest they took in our lives made the experience all the more pleasant.
42 Bannerman is definitely going to be our new local restaurant of choice and I look forward to seeing what new, innovative dishes this fantastic team can come up with. A wonderful experience.
UPDATE- I was interested to read the recent review posted about 42 Bannerman. Are you sure it is the same restaurant? My experience at Bannerman was outstanding, on the contrary both my husband and I consider communication at 42 Bannerman to be superior and thought the friendly, personal atmosphere was part of its refreshing charm. We certainly didn't go home hungry, I literally had to lift my husband to get out the door we were so full!
And while I am a vegetarian myself and my husband a diabetic, I found staff to be most accommodating and a number of vegetarian options available to suit my needs. While I obviously cannot contest the credibility of this review, I can honestly and vehemently say that my experience was COMPLETELY different.
This was an awful experience! Went with a group of 8 people, 6 of us went home with an empty stomach as nothing we could eat was brought out. They brought out dishes upon dishes which we were'nt eating but kept bring them and billing us for them. We told them no seafood and 1 vegetarian. 5 seafood dishes and nothing for the vegetarian came out!
We tried to resolve this issue with the staff but they were not co-operative, we went home hungry and having to pay for a lot of food we did not want, did not order and did not eat. This was a very upsetting experience.
I really enjoyed this restaurant. It is quite a novel place to go if you have not experience a traditional trattoria. They like you to sit and they will feed you. No ordering required. You will be served many dishes to share so you get a bit of everything.
The owner (mother) was very welcoming and treated us like we have know her for years. I also like the fact that they support local growers and change menu constantly. They bake all their own breads and make their own pastas. You get a traditional Italian flavour, not your average tasting meals. A great restaurant with a great atmosphere. Give it a go. I will definitely be back!
Over the past year i have watched this restaurant grow and improve over time. Like any retstaurant starting out, things take time. Finding decent staff or any staff in the Hills district is very tough and now Bannerman has pretty much got this sorted out.
The ever changing menu is prepared according to the days produce, mostly all obtained with in the Hawkesbury district including the meats and the farmers drop off their fresh pickings to the restaurant. They also grow alot of their own herbs and some greens in the garden behind the kitchen.
The noise problems have sorted themselves out with the owners sound proofing the ceilings and the restaurant has now extended out the back with a new room, leaving more space for tables, less people in the main room creating less noise as well. The new room also posesses windows through to the kitchen, so you can see what's going on.
The staff are very friendly and do try their best. When menus change frequently you can get some hit and miss, however, this happens at every restaurant. Not too many restaurants in Sydney this occurs where the menu can change so often, which I think is fantastic.
Comparing 42 Bannerman to other restaurants in the Hills District, this would be one of my first choices. There's alot of restaurants around here and most are dreadful. Keep up the good work!
We tried this restaurant out when it first opened and decided to give it time to sort out issues of heating, noise, slow service etc. 1 year later it is greatly improved with bigger areas, less noise but retaining a friendly family run atmosphere. We allowed them to "look after us" and were served a variety of tempting, innovative dishes served at a leisurely pace. Unfortunately we learnt that they are no longer going to be BYO on weekend nights which will prevent us from going again!!! Think again.
Make no mistake, this venue is a real Italian trattoria, right here in Sydney! If you don't know what it means, you'd have a hard job dining in rural Italy. Using produce of the day and blackboard menus are what these venues excel in. I agree with Mr. Mac (below) sometimes the meals are great, sometimes not so great but overall, they get it right. Yes it's noisy, trattorias usually are, have you tried Buon Ricordo lately?, that's noisy too.
If you're after a quiet intimate restaurant, then 42 Bannerman is not for you. When asking for water, tell them Warragamba Dam water is just fine, the wait staff are only too happy to oblige. I confess, not all the wait staff are up on their Italian (or what the menu means in Italian), however, we all have to learn somewhere don't we?
It is a little on the costly size, but you'll leave full to the gills! Usually one meal (not multiple) is MORE than enough, Bannerman don't scrimp on the size of the meals here, so in the long run value works out to be about right. Wines, well . . . . maybe they're a bit steep.
They get my nod of approval, great local dining. A perfect place to have a trattoria, just out in the countryside a little, reminds me of Siena . . . .
