15/5/06: Party of 7 for Mother's Day lunch cost $900 ($128 per head). Not cheap but fresh tasty food professionally presented and backed up by friendly helpful service made it all worth while. Next time we will book for an evening meal and enjoy the city lights.
December 2007 - 2 of our party of 4 arrived before time and were shown to a suitable table on ground floor. Drink order taken. We were then approached by waiter who offered us a "better" table. We were shown to an upstairs table beside the bar with restricted view and when seated decided that the original table was far better and asked to be placed back at the original table. This was declined on the grounds that the earlier table was now occupied.
My complaint to the head waiter was greeted with the comment that we had only booked 4 days ahead. I can only assume that a more regular guest had arrived unannounced and we were relegated. This approach soured our visit and accordingly we will not return. Food wasn't as good as during our initial visit.
Went there for a long sunday lunch with friends and we all had a wonderful day. The food is great and service is slick. Perfect location on a fine day.
I took my husband for his birthday, but it wasn't planned. Booked the table 2 hours before we went so I took a cake with me. As soon as I went in a lady at the door said (we don't usually accept this but we will let it go this time).
I was disappointed in the 1st minute, the bill came and there was 4 of us with $10 dollars surcharge per person for the cake!! mind you I asked if they had a cake available and they didn't. I will never recommend this place to anyone.
Overall great food, excellent spot and good service. I had the soft shell crab sushi for entree, absolutely divine. While it was a special, I highly recommend it be a regular menu item. Quite filling but not to the extent that it ruined the main. My main course was the John Dory, if the entree was an 11 out of 10, this would be a 9. Dessert was a fantastic Banana Parfait, authentic flavours, just beautiful.
Flying Fish has an extensive wine list, and excellent bar, I had a bellini to start, which admittedly, did not really justify the $18 price attached, but was a nice way to start the evening. My only criticism was with being charged for two bottles of mineral water (priced to the max) which we did not finish, the result of our water glasses not being filled regularly. A bit of a concern given the reputation of this restaurant. Overall though, highly recommended.
Had a beautiful lunch here. I had the tapas for entree, the prawn curry for main and souffle for dessert. There were some interesting flavours in the tapas and the curry was exceptional. Dessert did not disappoint. This is an expensive restaurant, but the food was outstanding and I found the service to be faultless. I love the look and feel of the restaurant, which is in a beautifully converted warehouse, with great harbour views.
We recently went here with some friends as a special night out and found the food to be good but not excellent as you would expect for the prices being asked. We all enjoyed our meals but felt it was way over priced, and little bit on the boring side where the food just did'nt have that WOW factor!
Great location and reasonable service. Food is ok but somewhat over-rated. The oysters were the best I have eaten for quite a while, and should be for $4 each. The special entree of sashimi was excellent, varied and very generous, compared to some of the other entrees seen about the table. The signature yellow fin tuna with sweet crackling pork and ruby grapefruit was interesting, but I am not sure if the grapefruit worked.
The tuna was of prime quality, however. For mains, $44 for prawn curry with four prawns in it is a bit over the top. Mud crab was pretty good, but a bit overwhelmed by the ginger and chilli sauce, which was not chilli hot, but suffered from the aromatics being very caramelised, which is the Sri-Lankan way, but overdone to my taste. It was maybe expensive at $130 or so. One of our party is a restaurateur originally from Kareela in South India, and obviously did not think much of the execution of the Sri Lankan influences by Peter Kuruvita.
My wife's grilled lobster with garlic and parsley butter was very nice, simple, not over cooked and the flesh loose and juicy. It was also around the $130 mark. The Greek salad side was tiny and uninspiring for $12. The Wagyu steak my 14 year old had was very good, with a nice porcini crust that did not overpower the meat, and tasty and tender porcini gnocchi. Kids enjoyed the various desserts, but I had cheese, quite a nice French blue and an ordinary Spanish hard cheese.
We had a party of 9 adults and 5 kids of various ages, and the bill was around $2,000, which included a couple of bottles of champagne some chardonnays and a few pre dinner drinks. I hate to think what the wedding reception that was there on the same evening cost! Still, the location is sublime, and a highlight was when a huge container ship begin towed in by tugs came close by.
Was there last night - outstanding. The knowledge of the staff, the freshness of the food and the feel of the space was extraordinary. Cannot wait to return.
