Delicious fresh North Indian cuisine served with fantastic Indian hospitality with Indian themed decor including a plasma screen with Bollywood music.

I've tried about 40 curry houses in Sydney and it's surrounds, this is the best takeaway joint I've found. As with most places you need to pick the right dishes, the Chicken Punjabi and Tikka Masala have been the best so far. Breads from the Tandoor are also fresh and tasty.
The restaurant is usually pretty empty, only a couple of tables occupied so we tend to get take away (plus you get a 10% discount if you pick up). There is a TV in the restaurant which they play Indian films on, I find TV's in restaurants pretty annoying so that also puts me off.
The service is quite good for a regional restaurant and the owners are friendly.

We chose Gandhi due to it's proximity to the cinema, and were encouraged by the menu on their website promising authentic North Indian cuisine. We were especially keen to try the Palak Patta Chaat, described as 'crispy spinach leaves in a lentil batter topped with chick-peas, potatoes, sultanas and garnished with tamarind, chili and mint chutney'. The dish served, however, looked more akin to Mexican cuisine.
Smothered in a sweet, red syrup (presumably the tamarind sauce)and raita (sweetened yoghurt and mint), the plate was in fact garnished with crushed papadums. As the menu neglected to note raita in the dish, my non-dairy companion could not eat it at all. After some consideration we asked if they could make the dish again with raita on the side. The waitress was obliging, and double checked also that our mains would have no surprise dairy components (they should not have).
The dish was reproduced, this time with no raita at all (perhaps, this is what was meant by the 'mint chutney'). The fried leaves were room temperature and tasted stale, certainly not prepared fresh! Again, the spinach swam in the sickly red syrup with no sign of the chick pea and sultana topping.
Regretting our visit already, it was not until we stacked our own plates ready to be cleared that the waitress returned and removed these in preparation for the main course. The premises appeared at half capacity, and it was now approximately 30 minutes since we placed our order.
Mains appeared, and were at best underwhelming. The Nanima Ke Aloo Beans were more potato than beans, disappointing but tasty enough if you wanted that much potato. Seafood Mayla was as described with enough prawns for two and tender fish, although might benefit from a hint of spice to assist flavour (mild here means no chilli whatsoever, which is great as an option for some).
The basmati rice was yellow, although not flavored with saffron as is typical. It also smelt funny so was not enjoyable as a plain mouthful. The naan at least was perfect.
As we waited for the bill, a woman setting tables near us broke a glass by accident. A single piece of glass landed on my plate, a fitting end to our mediocre experience! Gandhi is a place to eat, not to enjoy a meal. We won't return.

Very rude waitress who asked us repeatedly "have you finished eating yet?". Food was flavoursome but only a few chunks of protein swimming around in a lot of sauce. Not value for money.

I have been to this restaurant quite a few times and love it from the food to the service the whole place feels warm and inviting from the first step into the restaurant. The size of the meals might seem small at first but the flavors and smells coming from the meals are worth every dollar and I have never left the restaurant feeling hungry.

We ordered take away for four on their half price dine in Tuesday night. The place was pretty full and the waitstaff were very stressed, not really coping with the demand.
The food was acceptable but lacking in genuine India kick. The eggplant dish, usually one of our favourite at other Indian boutiques, was sorely lacking in eggplant! Not enough 'heat' in the Madras curry either. Prices are too high for the fare here.
That said, it's the only India at Ettalong/Booker Bay so we will try it again when we need our fix of Indian cuisine and hope for the best.

Decided to dine here based on reviews below. We started well with delicious lamb cutlets and tasty samosas. After that I was depressingly disappointed. The mains were, I am sorry to say, terrible. We had butter chicken, garlic prawns, lamb with spinach and a beef dish and none of these were enjoyable to eat. The (new?) floor staff were being trained which may have distracted the management, but honestly, I am surprised this restaurant has lasted this long (12 years as stated below).
Harsh words, but we were the only table eating in on a Friday night, so I think the locals already know to stay away. They have lovely decor and furnishings and the potential to gain a large client base, but need a better chef. Good luck Gandhi.
