    8.5 Highly Recommended

    Food  8      Ambience  8      Service  9      Value  9

I've been here a few times in the past couple of years, and have been basically pleased with the food and service each time.

First time was for birthday lunch with the family the year before last. I had an enormous bowl of noodles, vegetables and chicken, which was very nice. (I don't think that's currently on the menu, but I could be wrong). Other members of the party had various meat and vegetarian salads, all of which were very pleasant. The only drawback was the panini my mum had, which was thin and uninspiring and came with no salad. The other dishes were all reasonably priced, but the panini was a bit expensive for the meagre thing that was served up.

The second time was brunch with a friend. She had one of the all-day breakfast dishes and enjoyed it enormously. I had the organic beef burger, which was utterly delicious but rather tricky to eat, being too big and dripping with juice to eat by hand. I even found it tricky to slice it up and have all the "components" in one mouthful and ended up having to eat the bread separate from the meat etc. Still, it was so tasty that I'd order it again.

Today I had a slice of a very moist and quite tasty orange and almond meal cake and a pot of Earl Grey. The cake was pleasant, not gob-smackingly incredible, but still nice, and the tea was also good. I've had some dodgy Earl Greys in the past, but this was not one of them.

The service has always been friendly, although on the second occasion I visited the staff were a little distracted. The venue is relaxed, unpretentious and comfortable in a simple way, although it can be tricky to find somewhere good to sit if it's busy, the tables on the footpath are on busy Beaufort Street and have little protection from the elements. It's also rather hot inside in midsummer, as the cooling consists of overhead fans.

Despite these slight drawbacks, I will be returning, tomorrow, in fact!

Edit - I did return the next day and took a friend visiting from Adelaide to lunch. She loved her beetroot-y salad and I had a salmon tart, which was delicious but again there were no greens on the plate. Surely a few rocket leaves wouldn't break the bank? The waiter said "there's plenty of spinach in the tart" and yes, there was a bit, but not very much.

It's a pity about the continued absence of side salads (except if you pay another $8 or so for a whole salad), but I'll still be returning, as the quality of the food and the price is so good, and I like the unpretentious atmosphere.

    4 Below Average

Our first visit to this cafe was excellent and left us wanting to return to try some more things on the menu. However, the second visit was somewhat dissapointing.

My partner had a lack lustre panini and I struggled to find anything on the menu that was at all appetising for a vegetarian - the salads were heavily laced with cheese and eggs and all other dishes were either meat based or bread based (an interesting observation after having to listen to the waitress go on about how she had lost 9kg through cutting out bread). I decided to try their only vegan non-bread dish, a sad broccoli and potato salad.

Second time round we left despondently with smoke filled clothes (due to lack of ventilation in the cafe and burning food smells filtering in from the kitchen). Not a very eco dining experience.
