One of the things you would notice at first glance was their menu system. Large catalogue-style menus were easy to comprehend making it easy to order. The highly modern styling of the dining area with its multi-level layout made it a slight challenge to get a waiter's attention.

The waitstaff could have done more to create a less impersonal atmosphere, however, they executed their job expediently and we did not have to wait long before the food (generous in size and fantastic in appearance and taste) arrived.

Meal type: Weekday lunch (on a regular basis).

Typical dishes ordered: beef tataki. This used to be very good, and was covered with garlic and spring onion. But they have changed it to slices of raw white onion, which is nowhere near as nice as the garlic. Agedashi tofu. quite nice, but different to other japanese restaurants in that the sauce is really thick, perhaps, too thick.
Salmon sashimi set, always fresh. Udon. ok, not the tastiest, not the blandest.
Chirashi set, good choice.

Soft shell crab roll set. Always good, the crab is still crispy within the rice. Lunch special. Great value, a different combination each day, and so much food. You need to sacrifice eating the rice in order to finish all the other bits. Ambience: typically chaotic.

Pros: if you are there early, and order quickly, the food comes out quickly.
Cons: the chopsticks provided are horrendous. Cheap things that break in the wrong place and have lots of splinters. Matsuri should invest in better disposable chopsticks, or use actual chopsticks that can be washed and re-used.

Overall: a good place to go for lunch in the city.

I think Matsuri is one of the best value for money japanese restaurant in Perth. The set menu is very easy to order. For example: a set includes a main dish, two x sides, miso soup, and rice all for under $20. The salad dressing, in my opinion, is to die for. I always ask for extra dressing when I dine there.

The entree of tataki (paper thin near raw beef slices with spring onion and garlic, sprinkle with japanese dressing) and takonponku (cooked octopus with lemon dressing). One complaint though, the japanese tea is $1.50 per cup and I could be wrong, each refill is 50 cents. I honestly don't understand how they can justify that. Bring bottles of wine then.

We enjoyed our night at Matsuri. The prices aren’t dirt cheap but the food quality and presentation and service are very good, and the large glass walls give you an open feeling whilst dining. We would definitely revisit if we came back to Perth.
