Overview of Yu-u

Yu-u serves amazing Japanese cuisine in a low key ambience. So subdued is the place that finding it in Flinders Lane can be a bit tricky. No noticeable signage outside. Yet inside is lovely and quiet restaurant. You get to sit in a U-shaped bar or share the communal bench with other diners. Modern Japanese as its best, fresh sashimi and tender Wagyu beef easily captivate. Lunch time means a set menu focused individually on beef, chicken, croquette, pork, sashimi and salmon.

The food is lovely. The price fine. The service good. We arrived at 745 on a hot Saturday night. Famous for a reason.

One of the best Japanese restaurants that I had went to in Melbourne. Food was fantastic, ambience is nice but a little throw back by the look of the lady boss (I think it's the owner, not too sure about that). She seems to be a lot much friendlier to Japs than to us. Love the fried calamari and the tempura corn special that night. The yakitori was so-so but overall it's a place worth visiting for the amount of $$ you dine. A must try if you're in Melbourne.

If you're planning to go, better make a booking earlier as I've seen at least 3-4 groups trying their luck with no booking to no avail. One final note, no photography pls (in a stern voice of the lady boss). haha...

I had a beautiful meal here on a chilly Monday night. The food is lovely - traditional Japanese fare executed really well. The servings are small, so while individual prices look inexpensive, one ends up ordering more courses, so the bill starts to add up. But I think the price did reflect the quality. The staff were attentive and it has a lovely serene feel.

Summary
Great eatery. Came across this from eatability.com.au and decided it was worth a visit based on its high rating. Wasn't disappointed even though Japanese cuisine isn't normally high on my list of cravings. Braised pork belly was great. Yakatori platter is good but may be better to try multiple other small platters rather than BBQ'd meat to get a flavour of all the different tastes on offer.

We had a fabulous meal here, everything we chose was excellent. While our picks were the braised Pork Belly and the Calamari, all the choices we had were great. My partner, who is not normally a huge fan of Japanese also raved about the meal.

This is only a small restaurant, and has a great atmosphere. Approx 1/2 the seats are face on to a part of the service/cooking area, this was great for us as a couple, but for more than 2 I'd recommend asking for one of the few tables.

After walking past it twice we finally found the door, with no signage or lights other than a tiny sign to the side of the door. Once inside we noticed the wonderful ambience and feel of the restaurant with soft jazz music in the background.

Having never been before the waitress suggested as the portions are small we try a few. So we did. Then had more at the end as it was so delicious. The wagyu beef rolls and Kingfish were divine!

If you like authentic Japanese cuisine and you must try the plum wine! We highly recommend a trip up this dark alley to this hidden gem!

Yu-u is our benchmark restaurant in Melbourne. All food we eat when dining out is compared to what we have had there. It is yet to be matched. The ambience of this little hidden gem is great, but the food is why we love it. Simply outstanding. We still talk about it 12 months after we went there. Fans of Japanese cuisine will love this place. Value for money is also good relative to what you get.

I have a real soft spot for this place so maybe take the review with a pinch of salt but I genuinely love the atmosphere and the food. If you are after a cheap ish lunch with great food its amazing. The staff are nice and the ambience is good. The dinner is great as well although much more x'y than the lunch. Go for the chef's recommended course if you are new.

It is indeed hard to find and there is absolutely no sign of its existence except for this tiny fame on a worn-down wall. Although the 'mains' may be less than $15 they are sized like starters which mean you have to order many if you want to feel full enough. It's not fantastic and I think there are many other restaurants that give better value for money.
