The Undertaker has reopened and it's amazing. The ground level is now a higher end pub, very relaxed, great quality, well priced. The staff showed me to the dining room level as well but I wanted something a little less formal with my husband.
The staff were lovely! No sign of any pretensions in this venue! I've heard excellent reviews on the dining room and I'm booking a Christmas function here.
I popped in for a quick meal on my own around 9.00pm one Wednesday night recently, having a hankering for fish and wanting something better than fish and chips or the frozen-fillets-in-the-sauce-of-your-choice dishes of my local Asian takeaways.
It was pretty quiet in the upstairs dining room, perhaps a quarter full, with most meals near the winding-up stage. My bread, drink (a good lemon lime and bitter - many places are very ordinary) and water were all quickly attended to by the capable staff.
I ordered the Barramundi on a base of corn, chickpeas and chorizo. It wasn’t bad- one side was nicely crisp- but it was a bit mushy and just didn’t have enough flavour. The base was very tasty, but not particularly refined. Not really worth the $35 in my opinion. The salad of pear, walnut, apple and lettuce leaves in a blue cheese sauce I had as a side was of pretty good quality for $6, I thought.
I think this is a place where more of the money has gone into service and surrounds than into the food, which are not the proportions I’m after in a restaurant.
A big step up in quality of food and wine since a shocking meal in April. Flavours strong without being excessive. An excessive amount of oil to plate some dishes and sides. Very attentive wine service, though not too busy for a midweek lunch.
A bright light in a dim part of town. Recommended.
