We ate here about 18 months ago and didn't like it. We were at a loose end the other day and decided to give it another go. Wow... what a transformation.
The chef is Argentinian and now so is the menu. I had not eaten Argentinaina before but it seems the best way to describe it is a mix between Spanish and Moroccan. Whatever, was delicious. This is very much a menu of dishes to share. We started with the best dip I have eaten, a beautiful, smokey, dip followed by deepfried, crispy school prawns the grilled chorizo, empanadas, pumpkin salad and calamari.
The only dish I did not really like was the calamari, the rest were absolutely sensational. Still not wild about the interior, it is a bit drab and dark for such a beachy location but we will definately be back for some of the tastiest and most interseting food in the bayside area.

I went on a Sunday night with my girlfriend and really enjoyed my vegetable moussaka and two shared desserts (sticky date pudding and mango panna-cotta).
Be prepared and willing to wait, the service was efficient but the food slow to come out. This shouldn't matter considering you're dining to enjoy yourself. It also gave a great opportunity to work through and evaluate their own beer tasting plate, for $15 you get half a pot of each of their signature beers and these are very impressive!
Overall a great place to dine when you're not in a hurry and want to soak up the Black Rock vibe.

True South to be honest started off poorly but now has turned the corner. The kitchen and front house seems to be on their game now and I have not had bad service since the first couple of weeks. The bar snacks have clean flavours and the cook team seem to be producing some nice simple fair.
The key to this place is the range of home brewed beers. Especially the dark ale which works well in the winter. My mates like the pale ale as well. This venue can have almost cold first impression due to the fitout but this will be an asset in the summer months. During winter I wish the management would invest in some more heating and splash some colour or warmth through the place.
On a whole True South has improved steadily since opening and has finally gained a solid footing in Black Rock. If you enjoy a tasty beer and reasonable feed head down and give it a shot.

I think true south is a great place. Chilled out atmosphere right near the beach, own brewed beers, great coffee, great service. Best place to hang out after the beach in summer having fish and chips or even in winter for a coffee and comfort meal. I have been numerous times and would highly recommend it!

Awful asian chicken salad. The salad was overloaded with chilli so much so that no other flavours could be tasted. The chicken was extremely dry. It was inedible. The waitress apologised and spoke to the cook and relayed back that was the way it was supposed to be. No compensation, not a would you like a free coffee. Would never go back there.

I don't like judging a place if I've only been there once. I've been to True South four times. On my first visit they forgot our order while we waited and waited and waited. On my second visit they double charged us (I had paid, and then someone went up and paid again, we only later realised this had happened).
Third visit, we waited about an hour for our coffees (again maybe they forgot). On my fourth visit I had my daughter with me. It was 10:30 in the morning, no one was in the place except another couple. I was made to wait to be seated for 5 minutes. The waitress saw I was holding my daughter in 35 degree heat (and if you have a child you'll know holding them for that long feels like a loooong time). 5 minutes later the waitress comes back and says I can sit anywhere I like. Bad service!
The food is average, not bad but not good either. The chips taste awful. Oh actually, the waiter who brought the chips to our table dropped a few on my bag and just walked off. It's disappointing because this place really does have a lot of potential being on a beach location at Black Rock. And its a brewery, a sure recipe for success but not this time. Unfortunately, True South have lost this customer.

Very disappointing, forgotten drink orders and after asking a third time they brought our pre drinks after we had finished our meal. They started clearing the table while people were still eating.
The food wasn't that great but not bad. Portions are quite small, the burger comes with a total of six chips! The venue is quite trendy, however, it is a bit of a tight squeeze at times, there is a good atmosphere, however, the poor service and value for food let's this place down a lot.
