Tomodachi at Melbourne Central is a really good option for sushi train. The sushi is fresh and their variety is amazing. It's tempura and the prawns are ginormous. The thing that makes Tomodachi different is that all plates from the sushi train are only $3.80 each. I had the best scallop nigiri and also inari and tuna and sashimi salad and it was all the same price. And they have dessert dishes too. Great food, service and ambience. I have been a sushi fan for years, but often find it frustrating when you go to a restaurant and pay big dollars for something small served on a huge plate with lots of garnishing. Tomodachi is one of the few Japanese restaurants that bucks the trend, and they have some really innovative dishes, like tempura pumpkin sushi. Their menu is a mix of traditional and contemporary dishes, so there is something for everyone even if you don't feel like sushi.

I loved the tempura prawns and the teriyaki steak, and they even have Japanese beer on tap. Yum! The service was good and the prices very reasonable. The sushi train is great for when you just want a quick bite too.

The service was terrible. The waiter gave us attitude for no apparent reason. At one point he disrupted our meal and asked my friend if he had a problem with him. Very unprofessional. Avoid at all costs.

I see a lot of mixed reviews here. I am no Japanese masterchef to comment so bluntly on the quality so I'll keep this simple. The food is good, not great. Tuesday evenings are definitely best value as every plate is half price. Don't come here expecting anything flash, it's reasonable food at an affordable rate.

Service was excellent, really quick if you ordered drinks. Sushi Train was fantastic and would go again. Go on tuesday lunch for $3.50 per dish, great value, and try ramune, a fantastic japanese soft drink.

Went today for lunch and had the sushi bento box which included green tea. However, was not good value for money compared to bento I have had elsewhere. This one did not include miso soup or sashimi.

Always a pleasure to eat here, and even though I'm pretty much a regular there is always something new on the train. Great ambience as well. Al a carte menu rocks, my fav seafood okonomiyaki. Give it a go, so far it ain't disappointed me. In my top 5 restaurants of all time!

So ends my brief affair with Tomocachi due to horrendous service. Quite sad really. I was a good, and most often, returning, customer. The story went something like this, one lunch time I casually strolled into the venue and was greeted, like previous times with a waitress and given a booth. No dissatisfaction thus far.

Then the waitress popped down the drinks menu and the lunch time menu next to me. I already knew what I was going to order so I scanned the menu and called the waitress over to order a Chicken Teriyaki bento box. All good so far. Meal comes and looks slightly different to the usual lunch time bento, without putting much thought into it, and just assuming that they've changed their menus, I quite happily finished most of the my meal. Contented so far.

Then I go to pay. And this was the part that unstitched my entire association with Tomodachi. Cutting a long story short, the waitress had put the bento in as a normal bento rather than a lunch time bento. "If you told us earlier that this wasn't your meal then we could've changed it for you" - Hello? How was I meant to know it wasn't the right bento? "Well if you've only eaten half of your meal we could also change it for you" - Again, who orders their meals and only eats half so they could change their order to the one they originally ordered? Confusing I know, but nevertheless. "Well you should've specified that you wanted the lunch bento", it was the lumch menu the waitress gave me!

Outcome: paid full amount as I was running late for meeting, but have, am, and will always recommend anyone I talk to against visiting the restaurant. Quite a pity really, the food wasn't bad, and for a mere $12 they're going to lose one valuable return customer, and the whole bunch of people that I'm going to turn away. Food for though maybe?
