A Japanese restaurant listed at the top of the featured venues is a must try for me, thankyou Eatability! I had great anticipation and expectation when I visited their website's photo galleries, it stirred up a frenzied craze for wagyu (their speciality). A booking was made very shortly after, for a dinner out with my dear fiancee and her family.

On a typical cold winter's night in Melbourne, the warm greetings upon arrival was welcoming and we were promptly taken to our table, complete with covered alcove for the grille and large lush seats.

Taking the host's suggestion, we shared a range of signature dishes for entree as well as their special Toro combination platter. The standout dishes were Yukke: "wagyu beef mince with red and green apple sauce." (It's a steak tartare, try if you like raw meat or feeling adventurous!). Salmon Carpaccio: served with a sensational tangy citrus/onion/soy sauce.

The waitstaff were amazingly efficient and in almost no time, empty dishes were removed, a grilling pot was placed in its alcove and a selection of raw meat adorned the table. For mains we choose a range of meats: oyster blade, ox-tongue, eye fillet steak and Japanese sausages (like miniature cheese kranskys). My personal favourite were the ox-tongue slices.

To finish off the evening we ordered some desserts, including the Japanese Parfait.
No matter how fantastic the food is, great service is a pre-requisite for an outstanding restaurant, and Takumi certainly delivers it. Our host, Mimi, was particularly excellent in ensuring our evening went as smoothly as possible. She also took the time to have a chat with us before we left.

At a rough price of $60 per head, this place is certainly good for value, and I'm already planning on my next visit to try their ~$15 wagyu beef burgers on their lunch menu!

Tasty platters of wagyu beef that you grill at your own table. The beef is thinly sliced and you have the option of sea salt seasoning, or bbq sauce. The scallops are fresh (but not live as stated on the menu). The platters (more like plates with 8 thin slices of beef) will set you back between $19-$29. You will need at least 4 plates between two to feel anywhere near satisfied. Dessert was sweet red bean, delicate black sesame and creamy green tea ice cream. Tasty food, great ambience, but definitely not value for money. Group bookings incur a $40 per head minimum charge.

A lovely sauvignon blanc recommended by the owner/manager, coupled with a serene japanese ambience, was a perfect start to a wonderful dinner. From the get go, the service was impeccable, now all that remained to be judged was the food. Our night started with sashimi and one of their signature dishes, the salmon carpaccio which was simply exquisite. The wagyu beef and grilled food only further emphasised that the restaurant values fresh ingredients and quality produce. All this, without breaking your budget. A must try for japanese food.

My family and I really enjoyed our dinner at Takumi. The beef were excellent quality and so yummy. The marinated beef are very tasty, and my children loved them with the steam rice. There are a variety of sake and a few different types of Japanese beers. If you are looking for a hangout and drinking place, this place is excellent as there are many small plates of food suitable for nibbly. The service was excellent. Overall if you are looking for a Japanese restaurant in the city, do try this one out and you won't be disappointed.

My family of six, as young as 9 and as old as 65 just came home after having the best dinner experience at Takumi Japanese Restaurant. We all loved the charcoal grilled beef and the kids loved the concept of cooking on our own table. The scallops were sensationally fresh that we could not resist eating them direct from the plate.

The services were just excellent, we tried everything the friendly staff recommended to cater for all ages on our table, and we had no complaint from anyone. Thanks Takumi, I have never seen my kids eating so much and enjoyed every bits of it!

We will definitely return for more and be some of your most regular customer. I/ we recommend this restaurant to any one who loves fresh salads, beef and seafood. You have total control over how well you want your food cooked.
