Overview of Takumi Japanese Restaurant
New concept Japanese grilled restaurant specialising in the highest quality Wagyu beef. Set at the top of Bourke Street CBD, it is the perfect place to catch up with friends, meet business acquaintance and celebrate special occasions. Takumi has a relaxing and friendly ambience.
Great quality wagyu but utterly over priced for what it is. Expect to pay around $20 for a very small plate of unseasoned meat which you have to cook yourself. I would not think much effort is required to slice raw meat and vegetables. You can get a substantial amount of Wagyu in most medium-high end Japanese restaurants in Sydney, cooked to perfection, for less.
Some may enjoy the novelty of the experience, but we found it extremely unpleasant. You must constantly tend to your food in order to keep it from burning, while trying to eat what you have already cooked. There is insufficient ventilation and the overwhelming heat of the grill is ever present.
Service was above average, there was only one other party at the restaurant. Overall, not for the fine dining minded.
First time but certainly not the last. Great food and service. A nice change from some of the other older (?tired) Japanese venues. Will go back and have any of the sets with one of their excellent premium sakes.
I love good beef and especially wagyu. This cook-yourself fare was superb! Perfect meat, tender and fresh. We got a selection of wagyu beef to grill ourselves and an amazing cappaccio beef mince with raw egg. Delicious.
A little expensive in my opinion. We spent $70 per head with two beers each and left a little hungry. Each serve for the grill was a handful of beef slivers. My biggest concern is the heat from the grill. That, coupled with the spotlight we were, unfortunately, placed under, made me sweat at the table, not a great look when dressed up for a fancy dinner in the city.
I would go again, but not soon, not if I was starving and only for a special experience.
Went in on Saturday night for the second sitting and were treated to the best service and some of the best food we have experienced in a long time.
Not knowing what to order, we ordered the set menu (Set Menu C - $88 p/p) - The service staff were extremely helpful in explaining each of the dishes, how they should be cooked and which dipping sauce best suited them. The highlight of the service, however, was the floor manager turning my wife's chopsticks into some makeshift tongs (my wife can't use chopsticks so they used some paper and an elastic band so she didn't have to use a fork).
The food was amazing. The seafood was extremely fresh and served with amazing sauces and the wagyu lived up to the hype (and the price)! All in all a fantastic meal made all the more enjoyable by the friendly atmosphere and staff. Will return very soon.
Takumi, Saturday night dinner service. The staff were friendly and efficient, the decor stylish, mostly mood lighting (however, our table seemed to be under a spotlight!).
We placed entree orders of: Scallop Sashimi @ $12.80, Salmon carpaccio @ $10.80 plus Asahi 285ml happy hour beer @ $5.00 (b'tween 5 - 7 pm). The scallops were thinly sliced and delicately flavoured, melt in the mouth. The salmon was juicy and flavoursome, topped with mixed leaves and citrus dressing, divine.
For the d.i.y grill (built into the table) we chose: 100g premium porterhouse Wagyu @ $23.90, 100g Hirami Wagyu @ just $9.80, 1 x serve squid @ $4.80, 1 x serve abalone @ $6.80 also 260ml bottle warm house sake @ $8.00 (enough for 2)
2 x serves steamed rice @ $2.00 (each).
Dipping sauces were provided, all dishes were beautifully presented and no doubt top quality produce. The stand out dish was the Harami Wagyu (which is tender meat found around the diaphragm) exceptional value, melt in the mouth tenderness with just a hint of sweet offal flavour, I've never had a meat quite like it! Takumi, just go!
A Japanese restaurant listed at the top of the featured venues is a must try for me, thankyou Eatability! I had great anticipation and expectation when I visited their website's photo galleries, it stirred up a frenzied craze for wagyu (their speciality). A booking was made very shortly after, for a dinner out with my dear fiancee and her family.
On a typical cold winter's night in Melbourne, the warm greetings upon arrival was welcoming and we were promptly taken to our table, complete with covered alcove for the grille and large lush seats.
Taking the host's suggestion, we shared a range of signature dishes for entree as well as their special Toro combination platter. The standout dishes were Yukke: "wagyu beef mince with red and green apple sauce." (It's a steak tartare, try if you like raw meat or feeling adventurous!). Salmon Carpaccio: served with a sensational tangy citrus/onion/soy sauce.
The waitstaff were amazingly efficient and in almost no time, empty dishes were removed, a grilling pot was placed in its alcove and a selection of raw meat adorned the table. For mains we choose a range of meats: oyster blade, ox-tongue, eye fillet steak and Japanese sausages (like miniature cheese kranskys). My personal favourite were the ox-tongue slices.
To finish off the evening we ordered some desserts, including the Japanese Parfait.
No matter how fantastic the food is, great service is a pre-requisite for an outstanding restaurant, and Takumi certainly delivers it. Our host, Mimi, was particularly excellent in ensuring our evening went as smoothly as possible. She also took the time to have a chat with us before we left.
At a rough price of $60 per head, this place is certainly good for value, and I'm already planning on my next visit to try their ~$15 wagyu beef burgers on their lunch menu!
Tasty platters of wagyu beef that you grill at your own table. The beef is thinly sliced and you have the option of sea salt seasoning, or bbq sauce. The scallops are fresh (but not live as stated on the menu). The platters (more like plates with 8 thin slices of beef) will set you back between $19-$29. You will need at least 4 plates between two to feel anywhere near satisfied. Dessert was sweet red bean, delicate black sesame and creamy green tea ice cream. Tasty food, great ambience, but definitely not value for money. Group bookings incur a $40 per head minimum charge.
A lovely sauvignon blanc recommended by the owner/manager, coupled with a serene japanese ambience, was a perfect start to a wonderful dinner. From the get go, the service was impeccable, now all that remained to be judged was the food. Our night started with sashimi and one of their signature dishes, the salmon carpaccio which was simply exquisite. The wagyu beef and grilled food only further emphasised that the restaurant values fresh ingredients and quality produce. All this, without breaking your budget. A must try for japanese food.
My family and I really enjoyed our dinner at Takumi. The beef were excellent quality and so yummy. The marinated beef are very tasty, and my children loved them with the steam rice. There are a variety of sake and a few different types of Japanese beers. If you are looking for a hangout and drinking place, this place is excellent as there are many small plates of food suitable for nibbly. The service was excellent. Overall if you are looking for a Japanese restaurant in the city, do try this one out and you won't be disappointed.
