The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "This little eatery is charmingly offbeat: from the eye-popping is-it-art-is-it-porn photos in the bathroom to the gentle eccentricities of the staff, it's clear that this isn't your standard Japanese experience."

Been to Sushi Wushi 4 or 5 times. I am a local and find the food and service great. It's laid back/casual. Not the cheapest eats but ok. Love the Bento Box and warm Saki. Definitely worth a visit if you're local.

The food is low grade, you would be fed better at shopping malls. We're rather disappointed that as a local, there is no alternative. One of the worst we have had.
Response from Management:
We are sorry that you felt that way after your visit to Sushi Wushi, & can assure you that if your feelings had been communicated at the time we would of listened to your feedback & done what we could. We have an excellent review for the second year running in the Cheap Eats guide & have heaps of positive feedback. Please communicate with restaurant staff when you are unhappy unless you tell us otherwise we would assume you are happy.
Kindest Regards
Sushi Wushi

I am a regular of this great little eatery in Eltham. It's cosy bright & modern with a great menu. The food & service have always been great, friendly staff which are a mix of Asian & Japanese. A fabulous spot definitley worth a try.

Thought I would take the Mrs and I out for a treat. We both love Japanese and thought we would try the nearby Sushi Wushi. I was open about the food as had read two reviews, one saying good the other, not so good. They state themselves as having Modern Japanese Cuisine, so didnt expect traditional.
On entry and sitting as we viewed the menu, one would say the decor was more a mix of Asian/Oriental, paintings/prints and decor was a mix. Thai, Vietnamese and semi Japanese and Chinese. So I guess one could say modern, but definitely not Japanese.
Service was prompt, though we were the first seated guests ( they offer take away). The staff on the night were two Japanese women making Sushi/Sashimi, Eurasian dishwasher who looked very depressed and didn't want to be there, non Japanese chef and Euro wait staff and manager. Though this is not of great importance, it what's the food and service are like, but I thought I'd mention it.
We ordered some Gyozas, and Bento box ( SanDan box I think). Miso was nice though not trad but that's what we expect, had some bean shoots and shitake in it, was nice but served with a old Chinese spoon. Gyozas were nice, but the benito flakes on top were a bit over powering and took the flavours in the gyozas away. Perhaps and different varity of Benito could have been used. The Bento contained, sushi, sashimi, Chicken, rice. The sushi was ok, but the sashimi was smoked salmon and the white fish was smelly and not at all fresh. I left that. The chicken was more like Chinese style - soy, garlic, ginger pan fried.
Basically the meal was ok. To be honest I have had better at the mall at Northland. It was over priced, the wait staff talked in front of you with the other staff as food being prepared and we eating. The decor lends towards, basic cafe style with paintings not doing anything for the place and the music, was a seventies, solid gold type music videos and Tom Jones music.
Cheap crockery and utensils show that they on a tight budget. ( I mean you can still get stylish, durablitiy and cheap foodware) to me it is a western guy who has a passion for Japanese or Asain food, things and wanted to set up a restaurant. Hats off to him for doing so but if you really going to invest in it get the details right. Sorry to say Mrs and I will not return to there.

This restaurant is a disappointment. My partner and I have just moved to the Eltham area from Brisbane. In QLD we would eat Japanese 3-4 times a week. We were excited to find a Japanese restaurant close to where we are living, but sadly the 3 times we have been there in the past month have been only average with today's visit confirming in our minds that we will not be returning.
We arrived today and were not greeted on arrival or shown to a table. It appeared that they had experienced a busy lunch period with dirty dishes piled high on the bar/servery. The English chef told us over the counter that we were restricted to ordering only the pre-packaged food in the front display cabinet. I asked the waitress for a highchair for our 1 year old son, it took quite a few minutes for her to oblige the request.
We ordered a few items (rice paper rolls and avocado rolls) and asked for a serving of salmon and tuna nigiri (they did agree to preparing this for us). The waitress then disappeared to fold serviettes. She periodically looked in our direction with what can only be described as a disapproving stare. She lacked any sense of courtesy, and her attire, with her rather large, bare stomach hanging over her skirt, was not appealing. At no point did she ask if we would like a drink.
I had to request a drinks menu and some water. She delivered both and did not return again to the table. Our food was delivered to us by the Japanese girl at the front counter. I had to ask for chopsticks and soy bowls as the table was devoid of either. My partner got up to find serviettes. The nigiri was average, the freshness of the tuna questionable. We finished quickly and went to the counter to pay.
I cannot endorse their prices, they are expensive in comparison to most of the Japanese restaurants I have eaten at and nowhere near up to the standard. I would not recommend this restaurant and am disappointed that we are without choice in the Eltham area.

We have to wait for half an hour for our first entry (miso soup) and wait another 1 hour and 15 minutes for another entry and main course, the main course came first and the entry came last (??). The chef is not Japanese and they said their sushi chefs are Japanese but they are only two young international students. They use kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soya sauce) for their dressing, and that is definitely "not" Japanese cuisine.
Response from Management:
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your visit to Sushi Wushi.
Our Sushi Chefs are mature Asian woman who are delighted that you thought they were students!

We live in Eltham so very nice to have a Japanese fix close by. Very cute little restaurant, very intimate and a lot of fun. Chef not Japanese but that is OK.
