I would describe Straits as your run of the mill hawker style cafe close to what you'd find in Asia. The open kitchen + sound of wok/blazing oil, it's almost nostalgic. Service is prompt and friendly and I highly recommend the Char Kway Teow.

We love this restaurant, and have been coming here for years, although we live a reasonable distance away. For us the Sar Hor Fan is a real favourite.

It is always busy, but the service is friendly and prompt. It feels authentically Malaysian (we are often the only Anglos there). We have met people there who come from as far away as Williamstown for the special food.
We can't recommend it more highly.

Their chillies were spicy and there weren't enough asians. The chairs broke when I sat on them and this restaurant isn't fat-friendly.

I find this restaurant's Chow Kuay Teow, Penang Laksa, Har Mee and especially Sar Ho Fun, better than the ones back home in KL. Quick efficient service. Typical Malaysian ambience with the Kuali Roaring with the fire, clashing of the utensils and much chattering in the background. Something worth not keeping to the tradition is the atmosphere literally choking with fumes (although it has improved lately) and the MSG thirst that associates. But great taste and a must try. Just don't take too long to eat and hog the seats.

Great Malaysian food, great service. The ambience is pure Malaysian hawker style, lots of noises! For those who really appreciate Malaysian food without the 'style'.

If you like Malaysian food, this place is for you. If you go to restaurants to 'drink in the ambience', please stay home, for all of us.

The Straits is my local and I love it. If it wasn't local, I'd still travel for it. The food comes quickly and is easily some of, if not the best Malaysian/Singaporean in Melbourne. I recommend the Roti and Curry. If you order a Laksa, order one 'hot', because they tone down the heat for whitey. This is a shame, because we've got to learn to appreciate chilli at some time.

The prices are cheap, but the food is anything but nasty. The straits gives you an awful lot of bang for your buck.

This is a great place to eat if you like Malaysian. It is strictly eat only place, not a place to linger for the ambience. Look out for the Poh Pia when available usually on a weekend and it very fresh.
