Steer Bar and Grill’s recent reorientation as a New York grill aims to cement a greater focus on its original vision to take a firm place as one of Melbourne’s great steak houses.
Under the guidance of Paul Wilson, and with newly appointed executive chef Shaun Nielsen at the helm, Steer holds the largest selection of quality dry-aged grass and grain fed beef in Australia. Steer's main focus is prime quality produce sourced from amongst Australia’s best suppliers, a simple aesthetic geared towards evoking the best that produce has to offer and a cooking approach that places that produce front and centre –on the plate.

I went here with my partner for our anniversary. The interior design was very glamourous, but that was about it, under the facade there was no depth. The wait staff were quite aloof and lacked personality and friendliness.
The oysters were under sized and not fresh, you had to scrape them out of their shell and they would shred into mush.
The waiter forgot our complimentary bread, and when we asked for it in the middle of service, it still never came. The eye fillet was quite small, and for the size was over priced. Mid way through eating our steaks, we then received the selection of mustards to accompany our meal but it was too late, my partner had nearly finished his steak. The steak was not as tender or juicy as expected, and although had flavour, was not "amazing" as was expected for the price.
If you want an "amazing" steak everytime, go to Charcoal Grill on the Hill in Kew, or Ian Curly's restaurant The European, they are sure winners every time, and both places have the freshest, juiciest oysters and produce.
This place you are paying for eating in South Yarra, but you're not getting the quality, or love. Very disappointing.

Found myself visiting Steer with a group of friends on a Monday night after we tried to find a good restaurant that would be open (as many are shut on Monday nights).
First thing to note is that this is a true steak restaurant American style but with numerous steak options from around Australia, the waiter even brings out real cuts of meat to show you what the daily options are (personally I'm not a huge fan of this as I already know what a raw steak looks like). There were also good alternative options such as fish, chicken, etc.
For entrees our party of 4 ordered the calamari, hot dog, a salad, and the crispy crab roll. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our entrees, they were well prepared and very tasty! For mains 3 of us had steaks and 1 had fish with sides of steak chips, onion rings, and green beans, all of our steaks were cooked to perfection and I really enjoyed mine. We enjoyed them with a good bottle of wine from the Napa Valley California, the wine list was quite extensive.
We also all had deserts which once again we enjoyed. The service during the night was varied, generally it was pretty good but at certain stages it dropped off. The bill came to about $400 for 4 people, so not cheap but I would say worth the experience we had. Personally I would recommend Steer if you are looking for a good meal.

This place did not miss a beat. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome in a manner which was not over the top. Our water and wine glasses were always filled, and we were never left wanting for anything.
The bar chick knew her stuff, she created a very nice interpretation of a cosmo, whilst still being able to talk beer with the boys and make a decent coffee to end the evening.
The wine waiter could also confidently converse about every wine on the extensive menu and ended up providing exactly what we were after. Every dish had perfect flavour and presentation. Silence descended upon the table when the appertisers arrived. Each dish highly recommended. Yellow Fin Tuna Loin, Clam Chowder, Steer Hotdog.
For the main, We took on the Cowboy steak. 1200g grain fed beef, cooked to perfection, pre-sliced for easy access. Even though we couldn't possibly fit it in, we shared a Filled New York donut plate for dessert, simple flavours, not overly sweet or rich, ended the meal nicely.
The clincher for me was, when we were ready for the bill, it was there. Not one point during the evening did we struggle to get the waiters eye. Three words to sum up. Simple/elegant/ambrosial.

I have dinner here because of our deal coupon and knowing about Brazilian food I thought that we would have a great meal. The building is beautiful and decoration is impressive. The staff specially the seniro staff is not that friendly. We choose the barbecue that comes with rice, farofa, feijoada e palm heart salad.
The rice was great to make sushi as it was really sticky. The farofa comes with apple (unique style that not even in Brazil you can eat) and the bacon wasn't tender, tough that you could break your teeth and the feijoada that was blend, cold and tasting like Indian stew (in Brazilian cuisine there isn’t curry leaves and cumin in many dishes, specially in feijoada, should have Bay leaves instead). The salad that was serves wasn’t palm heart salad, it was lettuce salad with heaps of vinegar.
If you know about Brazilian food and want to have a good taste of it, I would recommend you to go to Sydney or Brazil (would be cheaper than eat at Steer). Don’t waste your money in this restaurant.

Food is reasonable but slightly overpriced for what it is. Service leaves a lot to be desired. Very amateurish and disorganized. One of the waiter's spilt a glass of wine over my shirt and pretended nothing was wrong! He failed to apologise and even charged me for the wine! Truly shocking! Avoid like the plague.
