Overview of Spitiko

Spitiko offers so much to those in search of not only a meal, but for a memory. The walls are packed with early migrant memorabilia, kitch and record sleeves of music a soundtrack to the 60’s and 70’s growing up Greek in Australia.

John does his best to make everyone feel part of his “spiti”, his home. Harry makes serving you look effortless and his absolute pleasure with his team of hardworking and diligent waiters. Harry’s dad Matthew along with John and Sotiri pay homage to the good old days, of simplicity and freshness of a great home cooked meal every night of the week with succulent, lemon crispy skin lamb on a spit every Friday.

There is live music Tuesdays, Wednesdays and a dedicated Rebetiko night on Thursdays.

We went to this local Greek establishment hoping we would have deliciously cooked and marinated meats and be welcomed with wonderful warm traditional Greek hospitality. How mistaken we were. The oven lamb was swimming in oil and lemon juice. The lamb and chicken meats on our platter were over cooked and saturated in oil and lemon also.

What was to take place later was to totally shock and bewilder all on our table. What looked like the senior staff of the establishment began dancing around what a folic symbol was placed on the floor of the restaurant. Spitiko = Never again.

This was one of the best restaurants I have been to in Melbourne for it's fantastic customer focused service (second to none) excellent food, sensational live entertainment and great ambience. Highly recommended!!
