We had a table for the Yum Cha right next to the kitchen door, which meant we got first dibs on anything that came around. The quality and service here are so much better.
The Shark Fin Inn is our favourite, cheaper than the Shark Fin House, but similar location (Chinatown) and close to half the price. People may think the service is bad sometimes, but it is a matter of understanding the service, if I want a good Chinese restaurant, I look for Chinese patrons and this restaurant has heaps of them.
Turn up at about midnight (which we do, for a very late dinner) and all the staff from surrounding Chinese restaurants are arriving. Following their lead, the food is plentiful, the wine list not so great (but caters for most tastes) and the service is sporadic. But this is Chinese food at its very authentic, cooked, served and eaten by Chinese in Chinatown and at a price that is pretty economical.
For special occasions, perhaps, it's not the place to go, but they still stock $100 bottles of french champagne, we've been there for long Friday afternoon lunches, Saturday night dinners after football, Sunday yum cha, and when we simply want some good Chinese with some friends.
We thoroughly recommend Shark Fin Inn as a quality place (albeit with a decor from the 1990's) for lunch, dinner or yum cha.
It wasn't my best experience for yam cha in terms of quality food and price. However, they have great services, which the staff will non stop offering difference kinds of dishes. It is a very busy yam cha restaurant so is better to make reservation/booking otherwise they only limit 1 hour for those didn't make booking and you wouldn't able get chance to try other food.
Dear food lovers, being an Asian food lover, I found this place through a friend who strongly recommended it. After going there, I quickly found out that the service wasn't good likewise nor was the food. The money that you pay, you would expect a little bit more from this restaurant. If you feel like Chinese food, I strongly recommend you to go somewhere else.
May not be the greatest yum cha in Melbourne, but we booked for 11am with a high chair, and there it was when we arrived! Staff explain every dish in English to the 50% diners who are not of Chinese descent. Prompt with good tea and cutlery for children.
No great surprises with food, and not as refined as elsewhere, but the kids and wife were happy, and prices remain low.
While it's the usual hussle and bustle of an inner city Yum Cha, the food on our recent trip was great. All the classics done well and we re-ordered many a dish. Of course the wait staff were the usual dismissive, quickly to your seat type but whenever we had to flag people down for a drink, they were quietly speedy. Definitely heading back for the great, well priced Yum Cha.
Over the years, I have dined at this original Shark Fin restaurant many times, originally for their excellent yum cha. However, in recent years, the quality of the yum cha ingredients has decreased significantly such that I have changed my yum cha restaurant. Having given up on Shark Fin's yum cha, I started enjoying late night Congi (a kind of rice porridge-soup containing a choice of meats/seafoods). I loved the seafood congi and ate it often, usually late at night after seeing a show. However, over the past 6 months, the staff at this restaurant have proven themselves extremely dishonest. As the congi does not appear on any English language menu, they have started changing the price of this dish from visit to visit, fluctuating from the original $7.50 price up to a staggering $12.50 for the exact same dish. The price goes up and down depending on the whim of the waiter. I would very much like to hear from a patron who can read Chinese what the actual price listed in the menu is for this dish. Anyway, the short of it is, I am never going to this restaurant again. The service is poor and they are clearly desperately money-grabbing. Not conducive to a hospitable experience.
My comment is on the Melbourne one only - I've not tried the Burswood one. The food is as good as Shark Fin House - it's just not as plush but you certainly can't knock the food or the value for money when you talk Yum Cha.
Shark Fin Burwood. Very Busy Sunday Night, lots of Chinese so good sign. Fifty five minutes later got up and walked out as hadn't been served despite asking four times over that period. Apologies were "Sorry we are very busy tonight as you can see, will be with you shortly" Prawn Crackers we're OK but that's as far as we got. I think they lost the order but weren't ready to admit it.
Typical of a good yam cha venue. When it's good, it's really good and when it's bad, it's realy bad. Tend to treat anyone that's not Asian like they don't know what they want and often skip offering you certan selections. However food can be very good on occasion.
