I have only been here once so far, with a fairly small group, but found the food very nice and the service more than adequate. I have been to China & the food includes some westernised dishes & some that are more what you would get in China.

The young waitress was pleasant enough. I wonder if this is because we had decided to only have a light meal, hence didn't spend enough money at her 'restaurant'?

The restaurant was cold (and it's still Autumn), and the painted concrete floor was slippery.

The food was horrific. The 'special' fried rice was barely tepid with few ingredients, greasy and actually smelled like old deep fryer fat! It was also very small which in this case was a good thing. The salt and pepper squid was only ok but quite bland. The pork dumpings were also just ok considering other places that offer Melbourne's 'best practice' freshly steamed dumpings.

The prices are higher than the commesurate quality of the service, decor, and food served.

Have been to Shanghai Ling on several occasions, and have also had a couple, of take-away. Food is always consistently good, and quite different from what you get at a traditional Chinese restaurant. Ling herself is great host. Only ever had one dish that we didn't like, and Ling quickly spotted this, came up to find out if there was a problem, took the dish away and gave us something else and did not charge us. That level of service is something rarely seen these days.

Good food from a renowned chef, fast and friendly service and good value. Specials are good, Shanghai fried noodle are a great compliment to the main dishes. Has a bit of a cult following in the area, regulars always recognised.

Not sure what Matt Preston saw in this place, or maybe I ordered the " slightly gluey-sauced Cantonese dishes" he mentioned in his review, but I was disappointed. I would rather travel 30 minutes to Chinatown for decent Chinese food. Lings should have stuck to cooking fish and chips.
