I hate to buck the trend here, but during my student days I must admit I used to patron here and their other, now defunt, outlet on Smith St a lot, due to their ridiculously low price dinner boxes, including an Entree, Main and a drink or dessert (which I opted for the Green Tea Milkshare the most).
Having said that, I think the Japanese food served here is probably one of the if not the worst in Melbourne. Should I bother to review this place? Yes because it is so cheap.
Am I being too harsh on this place, since $12 dollars shouldn't entitle me to eat a great dinner meal? Unfortunately I found that as it became busier and busier, the food still managed to decline further and further, to the point it's inedible anymore. Not even a 3 course meal for $12.00.
The Hamburgs use such crap meat it has a distinctive unpleasant smell. The batter on the fried chickens now tend to fly off without adhering, never mind that this kind of cooking isn't Japanese anyway. The soup noodles like Udon has a soup base that is nearly purely soya based. The tempura prawns are not crunchy, they're slightly chewy and tough.
The Teriyaki dishes here have a pleasant, commercial like Teriyaki sauce with too much sugar and artificial smokiness but it's passable. I think the fish they use here for both mains and sashimis are actually ok quality - it's just the meat they use here that I have a problem with, both beef and chicken.
If I haven't encountered similarly cheap Japanese operated Japanese places in Melbourne, I wouldn't even bother to give this place a bad review. Guys - there are much better places out there, for not dissimilar prices.
This is the place to go for fantastic Japanese food at near-to-no cost. The fish in the sushi are delectable and the Green Tea Milkshake is *highly recommended* (for the bittersweet tooth). The only letdown, however, is the service. I guess the high turnover rate the tiny restaurant achieves leaves little room for PR, but still, the waitresses could add a little sparkle to the dining experience by smiling some.
Try to beat the peak hour rush!!
The fish is top quality and so fresh. Everything is excellent value for money. The Teriyaki sauce is just beautiful. Try to go there earlier to avoid crowd.
