What an unpleasant surprise! Looked like a nice enough restaurant but the food and service was very bad. Deep fried fish with tartar sauce, tasted like out of the freezer from the supermarket. Udon noodle soup was tasteless and the beef, we did not even try it! It stank. On top of it all this does not come cheap! Would not recommend this place at all.

Had a really nice work-day lunch here. Well priced for 3 small tapas style entree dishes and a main of chicken Terryaki and rice. Others had the beautifully presented sushi rolls. All very tasty fairly simple Japanese food. Looking forward to going again.

Not sure why someone said these are the Korean versions of Japanese food. It is actually not true except for may be 1 or 2 dishes - the pancake or a bimbimpa, etc. Funny thing is, if you actually go to Japanese restaurants in Japan, most of them have way more Korean influenced dishes than here, including the bigger izakaya chains such as Shirokiya, Wara-wara, or Watami.
Granted the owner of Kura is a Korean man, his chef is a Japanese person. The better description of the food here is that they're a new interpretation of Japanese food, using mainly Japanese flavours. It is certainly incorrect to say these are Korean versions of Japanese food, as there is very little use of chilli or sweet sauce nor other bold flavours that are the trademarks of Korean influenced food.
The food here are izakaya style smallish/tapas sized and best to be eaten with a good beer, shochu, sake or even wine. The quality of the food is definitely above average and very creative, which reminds me of some of the smaller modernised Japanese restaurants in the side streets of Tokyo.
Surely one of the hidden gems in Melbourne. Not as successful as Yu-u or Movida but it is becoming more busier. Horoki is another place that wasn't overly full before until it got a review on the paper and Cheap Eat guide before people started rushing there.

Wouldn't say it was Japanese, more like Korean versions of Japanese Food. Nothing Authentic here. Good range of sake but that's about it.
