The Age Good Food Guide
Sails on the Bay summarised reads as "superb food with matching outstanding view of the beach". Starting in 1994 as a basic fine dining place, Sails on the Bay has since expanded to include a terrace café for lunches and weekend breakfasts and generous private spaces for private dining, wedding parties and conferences.
Sails on the Bay is all about seafood dishes with a modern Australian touch. The seafood on their menu (Yarra Valley river trout, grilled barramundi fillet, and freshly shucked oysters, to name a few) is well-sourced and prepared. Cross references to Thai, Japanese, Middle Eastern and old-style bistro cuisine are noticed and appreciated by ladies who lunch, couples on romantic dinners and other loyal patrons of Sails on the Bay.
Surrounded by glass, Sails on the Bay Restaurant is kissed by the sun and golden sands of Elwood Beach, providing a lovely canvas for the ultimate dining experience.

Very disappointing food regardless of the price. Sophisticated menu but poorly executed. Questionable freshness of seafood, some ingredients felt pre-prepared and reheated (fish, risotto), flavours were not balanced, red meat not cooked correctly (way overcooked) overseasoned and definitely way overpriced. Service was good but after paying the bill I felt ripped off. Would not recommend it. Fail.

Cannot believe how long this restaurant has been around, it still seems so fresh. Had an amazing dinner with the family for my sons birthday. From being asked when I booked would I like a choclate plaque saying happy birthday on his dessert to the dessert appearing with candles And a singing waiter, very funny. Wonderful restaurant that contains so many happy memories for myself and family through the years. Just wanted to shout a Big thank you.

Great location and everything feels "right" for a great dining experience, but the food and service is a big let down. Arrived for a Sunday birthday lunch and our booking had been "lost" completely. Five of us were seated at a 4 person table with a chair thrown on the end, I asked for a larger table (we were the only people there in a 140-seat restaurant) and was told "I would rather leave the other tables for any other customers that come in". Wow! Good way to value your customers.
A few of us had the 3 course seafood melange ($75). Servings were unreasonably small (first was one scallop in four slices, a tablespoon of smoked salmon and two 20c-sized slices of swordfish in a creamy shallot sauce). "Bloody Mary" and "Margarita" oyster shooters were just tomato juice and syrupy lemon/lime juice - some alcohol would be nice at this price. Second course was salmon with some Asian greens (two snow peas and one arm of baby bok-choy, undercooked).
Salmon was good and was complemented by the creamy shallot sauce. Third course was two prawns, one baby scampi and a crabmeat seaweed parcel. Prawns were dry and very overcooked. Crabmeat parcel was very tasty and the standout of this dish. It came with a few sticks of julienned carrot and some cabbage, all soggy and overcooked with no flavour. Could not find any hint of the chilli and ginger dressing, only the same cream sauce as the first two courses.
All three courses had the same creamy shallot sauce, tasty as it was and for $75 I would expect far more variety than this. We got a shaved fennel, artichoke, olive and tomato salad ($9.50) for the table, which had three cherry tomato halves, four olives and was mostly salad greens with a little fennel. Lemon dressing was very pulpy and overpowered the rest of the flavours.
Service was fairly attentive without being invasive. Overall, food was uninspired and dear, it felt a little more like a mid-week special in delivery than a fine dining experience. There are many far better restaurants nearby with similar views and better food for a better price.

I have been going to sails for years. We went last Thursday night for my sons birthday, once again we were so happy with the food, service and atmosphere. Such a warm and friendly place. Definitely be back soon!

Dinner on 25/2/11. Restaurant half empty in prime time. Food marginal except for kids meal which was an excellent value and good quality. Nice wine list and beautiful setting/facility. Very disppointing meal. Trying too hard to be master chef. Missed serving things that really taste good.

Simply terrible. Service was lazy. Overpriced. Pretentious food. I will not go there again. If you're planning a special occasion, go somewhere else, there are lots of nicer places along the coast.

The evening began with extremely poor service, we waited 20 minutes for each drink order to be brought to our table. The first course of natural oysters and scallops where good, the remained 2 courses that required actual cooking were extremely disappointing. The prawns were over cooked, the crab had minimal meat, the chilli and Ginger dressing was missing the chilli and Ginger and it all sat on a bed of flavorless vegetable type salad.
Grossly over priced food, with only 4 or 5 mains to choose from all priced at $40 and above. Honestly an utter let down and none of us would ever contemplate going again.

16th Wedding anniversary - same venue - same sense of being valued. Great menu - warm and knowledgeable service - My favourite Melbourne restaurant. It just grows and grows. Roll on my 17th (or maybe a birthday - or maybe just cause I can).

It has been 10 years since my wife and I visited Sails on the Bay, having moved to Perth, I thought it was good then but it is even better now. Everything about this night was so great that we went to the cafe the week after and had a beautiful breakfast. I'm confused about whether people are writing reviews about the restaurant or cafe, either way we found both a great reflection on Melbourne dining. We'll be back hopefully in less that 10 years.

I am very disappointed with the lunch we had today, overpriced and very ordinary. The minestrone barely covered the bottom of the bowl, as if the tide had gone out. The poached chicken was tasty but the red cabbage salad was rough and unappealing in both presentation and taste. The berry pavlova was good.
