Leader Business Awards - Best Restaurant In Yarra Ranges
Saffron Cottage prides itself in serving quality foods specialising in North Indian Cuisine.
Within our menu you will find remarkable dishes that are reminiscent of heritage recipes that have been passed through the generations. Our Chefs have mastered the use of indigenous Asian spices and herbs in cooking and this is especially evident in our "signature" dishes.
With breath-taking views of the Dandenong Ranges, two open fireplaces and food which is simply sublime, Saffron Cottage offers a totally unique and ultimate dining experience.

The service was slow. We had to ask for menus and a drink twice. Food was delicious but corkage was ridiculous at $7 per bottle.

My visit to the restaurant this weekend was dissapointing. Myself and my partner usually love Indian food but it was just not up to standard. The delays were about 30 mins to get a drink and 2 hours to get mains and they really were not worth the wait. We went elsewhere for dessert and coffee. It took far too long.

A visit to Saffron Cottage never disappoints. The food is fresh, wholesome and so full of the delicious flavours we are looking for when nothing but Indian will suffice. The service is friendly, warm and attentive and the atmosphere in house is really comfortable. I love to drop in on the way home from work when I just don't feel like cooking but want a great meal. Take away is also a terrific option on a cold winter's night!

Service is friendly and responsive. Atmosphere is cosy inside and the outdoor area offers a nice view of the ranges. Large range of food, and I have been impressed with everything I've tried. Offers decent value, a main meal with rice and naans cost us around $20 each. Recommended.

For those who are a little unsure or sceptical about eating in an 'Indian restaurant' then Saffron Cottage should surprise and make the fussiest of diners to feel good, relaxed and in the mood. The interior is rustic, but with the important touch of class that's backed by warm and respectful service by the staff. Meal delivery times can be long depending on order volumes, but eating there is about the whole experience, so rushing your night out is a no-no anyway!
The menu size is a little overwhelming, so knowing what you want would help, otherwise, ask a friend or the friendly staff for some guidance. For those who don't like 'hot' there's always the Butter Chicken and the Tandoori dishes. But for my son and I we go all out and order the Beef Vindaloo - hot! And hot it is, not burn your taste buds away for 2 days hot, but full flavour, make your nose run hot!
But you can also order the medium Vindaloo, which may have less taste as a result. You can also order chicken and lamb Vindaloos, but I think sticking with red meat for this is the way to go so leave the chicken for the other dishes, such as the Madras or Jalfrezi.
Some say the prices are a little high, but I think they represent good value considering the venue, service and food quality. Service volumes are just right. The rice and breads don't disappoint either.
I meet up with a group of friends there every 3 or 4 months and I have to travel from near Frankston to get there. Well worth the trip and I go there without them as well. In a nutshell Saffron Cottage strikes a rare balance between rustic charm, classy surroundings, warm and friendly staff, top food quality, decent servings (without being too big) and good value considering the venue, food and service.
And no I don't work there! Tonight I plan to go to Punjab's Sweets in Dandenong as it has great reviews. I'll give it a review soon. Happy eating!

The food is truly delicious, with friendly staff and a lovely ambience. It was very busy when we went (Sunday night), so I would definitely book in advance. It appeared that takeaway took quite a while, but if the food is good, it is worth the wait. I wouldn't sit near the door though, as people coming and going can be intrusive, as well as cold in winter!
We tried the lamb korma and mixed vegetable curry, both of which were delicious. I was impressed 2 with the vegetarian dish, as many places that aren't specifically vegetarian can really mess up a vegetarian dish. We also had the kashmiri naan, which is the best I've tasted!
The prices were quite expensive, particularly for a hills' restaurant, but the taste was worth it. I guess we just won't go there too frequently!

I would follow Nikki anywhere, my wife and I were huge fans of Miraj when it was in Boronia (we still miss it), and saffron cottage manages to add a lot more sophistication to the mix. Worth the drive, as someone else said, 'one of Melbournes gems'!

The food and service is just about average, the atmosphere is pleasant but as the place is out of the way I am not sure if it is worth the drive but might give them another try if in the area.
