Wonderful middle eastern cuisine with a contemporary twist. I live in Sydney, but travel a couple of times a year to Melbourne for work. This is one of the venue, I always come back to.
Reasonable Middle Eastern banquet, though expensive for what you get. Excellent selection of wines/sherries by the glass that went well with food. Very good service. One point. We arrived at 5.50 for a 6.00 booking, knowing we had to be out by 7.30. The restaurant refused to seat us until 6? A good local, but a bit pricey for what you get given the local competition.
We had the banquet and left very full. Could see what the kitchen staff was aiming for in terms of the food ideas- ie quail kebabs, (which were a bit salty and fiddly) but it certainly didn't live up to all the hype. There are comparable middle eastern banquets elsewhere and at much cheaper prices.
Unique dishes, quite enjoyable. During the booking, they state how long we can have the table for. Serves were around the right size. I thought the service was also quite good, the waitresses were quite attentive. The only error on their part was when they served the wrong dish on one occasion.
We went for dinner at Rumi in January, I had read a number of favourable reviews in Gourmet Traveller and the like and love middle eastern food.
I loved the building and decor, really nice mix and still nice and casual so anyone would feel comfortable there, particularly like the little gold trays drinks are delivered on. I have read negative things about the service in other reviews, our waitress was great (a young blonde woman), friendly, helpful and always managed to appear at the appropriate moment. I had also read that the restaurant was really hot, we went to the later sitting on a 37 degree day and it was fine.
I would have to say the food was a bit of a let down and I think the presentation of the restaurant carries it further than the food. It was a busy night and some dishes where very good, more the combination of flavours rather than the way they were cooked, for eg Fried cauliflower with onions, currants and pinenuts. The Sigara Boregi which was a pastry shaped like a cigar was really disappointing, very oily (they probably just needed draining) were served in a puddle of oil and left that feeling on your tongue. We had a lovely dessert and the Turkish coffee is good. Also, liked the concise wine list.
It amazes me that with so many restaurants to choose from, restaurants like this are so successful. You need to book in advance and there are strictly 2 sittings per evening.
I would give it a go for the overall experience, and if the food was a little better it could become a regular trip. I must add that I was excited about going to this restaurant and from all the reviews had relatively high expectations. I guess the other thing is that I have a couple of favourite middle eastern restaurants where the decor is basic but food and value amazing.
Such beautiful food. It can sometimes get a little noisy but overall not too bad in that respect. I've never eaten anything here that has been disappointing, you can be adventurous and know that you're going to enjoy whatever you order!
I ate here with friends and so tried a number of the dishes. The food was very good, but not exceptional considering some of the reviews I had read. I think the vegetarian dishes were a lot better than the meat dishes. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. My main complaint was the temperature, it was extremely hot inside (no air-con), we were all sweating, which means I will score them low for ambience. I am surprised at how popular this restaurant has become, I didn't think it was that special.
