I organised for a group of my friends to have dinner at Rumeli on Saturday night. I had not been to Rumeli since they shifted to their upstairs venue, so I was curious to see whether their original hospitality and value for money was still in place. Sadly, I can't say that the transition to a larger venue has done them any favours.
While the ambience of the venue is fantastic, as are the band, the food is definitely *not* what it used to be. For $45.00, I was expecting the food to be more plentiful than it was, but all we ended up with were some very good dips and bread, a plate of half-cold and fairly mediocre meat, rice and salad (and all our meals were served at different times), and a random dish of seasoned chicken. We waited and waited but No dessert was forthcoming, despite it being advertised as part of the banquet we'd paid for).
I'm hoping that most of the $45.00 we paid goes toward the band, because they certainly earned their fees, unlike the (female) bellydancers, who were far from entertaining. Just for once I would like to see a Turkish restaurant hire some female bellydancers who have charisma, talent, actual dancing skills, and some passion behind their craft! The two males who danced were much more polished and had better stage presence than the two women.
Overall, Rumeli is a great place to go for a drink and a dance, but don't expect much in the way of the cuisine. It seems that the shift from a family-style restaurant setting to a large function centre setting has meant compromising quality for quantity.
I'd probably go back at some stage for a fun night out, but I wouldn't really recommend it to my friends.

One of the better Turkish restaurants around in Melbourne but music during meal service was way too loud to a point where conversation was impossible.
Waiters were unapproachable but overall a pleasant experience if your expectations aren’t too high. The show was entertaining expect for one of the belly dancers who looked like she didn’t want to be there! Where as the others were full of energy and great to watch.

I had booked Rumeli's for a girls night out for my sister who is to be married. The night began with no EFTPOS machine which meant that half of us had to go searching for an ATM, which was a pain. We had my mum with us and a few other mums. I have to say as a young person that even for me the music was Intolerably loud and all of the others on the table said exactly the same thing.
Everybody had to yell into each other ear drum to be heard and most of us left at the end of the night with headaches and ringing in our ears. Conversation was impossible and an otherwise enjoyable night was spoiled. Also we all paid $50 per head and after the first amount of food was served, the 2nd 3rd and 4th courses didn't come out until after 10.30 pm by which time nobody felt like eating anymore, so we all determined to at least have our dessert, so we waited and waited until midnight and still no dessert, so disappointingly we had to leave before dessert was served, so I can't say that was good value for money!
There was only about 20 minutes of live entertainment after 11 pm and I know the website says that the band plays a mix of 80's and 90's hits along with traditional turkish music but I can promise you, you won't hear anything But turkish music and it will be loud enough to leave you with tinitus at the end of the evening!

The evening started by walking through an unmarked entrance from the street, up a gawdy, neon-lit, tired-looking carpeted stairway, to be greeted by a very rude and surly lady collecting payment for the meal. She was so argumentative, attempting to charge us more than the agreed meal price that we expected to pay as booked via the website, www.menulog.com.au.
We ordered the $50 banquet for a special promotional price of $35. At most quality middle eastern restaurants, a $50 banquet will get you a good mix of tasty seafood and meats, with desserts, coffee and a good selection of soft drinks.
What we got (and didn't get) for our $50 banquet included: A selection of dips, they were tasty. Unlimited pide bread. A plate of salad to share. There were none of the traditional Turkish hors d'oeuvres expected in a dinner banquet (such as dolma, beans etc).
A plate of mushy, gluggy Turkish pilav (rice) with 2 skewers of bland meat (lamb and chicken) and salad (brought to our table served already plated, rather than placed on our tables for each of us to serve ourselves). A bowl of guvec, a vegetable casserole with a couple of pieces of lamb, to share. Unlimited jugs of Coke and tap water (they refused to serve Diet Coke when requested). By the time we left around 11:30 pm, no dessert nor coffee was served.
The entertainment was very very "loud". The band was certainly entertaining, with lots of dancing to traditional Turkish songs, however, the synthesised music became a bit repetitive after a couple of hours. The belly dancing show was probably the best part of the night, particularly the performance by the male belly dancer with his fire twirling and snake routines with lots of audience participation.
Overall my experience at this establishment was very disappointing, a low-class establishment with mediocre food and service. There are much better Turkish and other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurants with banquets and live entertainment to enjoy throughout Melbourne.

I was at Rumelis Turkish Restaurant for a party of 15 on the weekend. Those guys can really entertain. Our kids our parents, everyone was so happy.
You can tell the guy wearing the hat on stage really loves his job. I think he is the owner, because when he is not on the stage he's either playing with the children or packing up plates that the staff have missed.
For $35.00 per person we were bombarded with food, and not just plain old turkish food and bread. Things we haven't had in a turkish restaurant before. We couldn't dance as much as we would have liked to, because we were too full, and they should have told us to hold back a little on the dips and bread because we were expecting to go hungry after the main course.
The staff were very friendly although it would be good if they talked a little more.
and pwoaahhh! the belly dancers? they are up to date with their performance, found it really good that the chap in the hat actually made the effort to announce that there will be a snake in the small part of the performance so my wife could run out to the balcony in time to observe from what she would consider a safe distance.
The atmosphere was very cosy and welcoming. I haven't danced with my wife for a very long time and I did on the weekend. The very very huge balcony was utilised well by smokers and people who just wanted to catch up and have a beer.
The friendly security guard at the door was wearing a suit and tie, which was interesting, and non intimedating, explained why he had to check our bags for alchohol and I could understand it by the end of the night. Because no one was drunk. and its a family friendly atmosphere.
Were asked to sort out the bill as we walked in which saved us from the headache of splitting it at the end of the night, and being too careful at what we spend in the bar. We chose our banquet before we came. and believe me, do they have a variety!
I will definitely be going back and taking more people! good on you guys. Its about time I found a place I can actually enjoy myself.

Dearest Rumeli's gang, I have barely managed to get my feet back on the ground after Sunday nights fantastic event (Nov1 09). I would like to thank you for pulling off the best night ever for my family and friends. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
I am still receiving feedback from the night, today. One guest said to my husband the next day, "it was the most fun night ever. I enjoyed myself, my wife and kids enjoyed themselves, so whens the next party?" It was an amazing party and it will go down in our history as one of the best ever. From Bilgen, my kids and myself, again a huge thank you. 10/10 without doubt!

The best value for money food, entertainment and service. The food was authentic, fresh and tasty. The entertainment was enjoyable, as were the belly dancers and their guest appearance. Umut and his family went out of their way to ensure that everyone has having a great time. There was so much good food and great entertainment that we wanted to party all night. Thankyou for providing a traditional Turkish restaurant that appealed to people all ages and cultures.

This restaurant is definitely the best! My family are always going out to restaurants and have finally found the one that has the full Monty! We weren't expecting what we got and were a little under dressed. There was so much food we were embarrassed that we couldn't eat it all.
Then by the end of the night we all had sore feet from dancing! The belly dancers were amazing! and the band was awesome. One minute we were dancing to traditional Turkish stuff. Then the next minute it was Ricky Martin! The family that run the joint were so friendly and welcoming.
Definitely will go back there and will take more friends!

I was at Rumelis on the weekend and never have I been entertained like this. Although there were 250 other people I felt at home. I can understand why people have to pay upon arrival on weekends. Only because they understand that it would be awkward for me to ask for people who have turned up to my birthday party to pay for themselves.
The service is pretty good taking into count that they are serving close to 300 meals in an hour. Their are children runing around and people dancing till their feet are sore. It wasn't one skewer or tooth pick skewer every half hour like every other Turkish restaurant. I had my own meal with the most tender lamb and chicken that melts in your mouth.
The setting is almost like a studio with a groovy and trendy setting. For $35.00 per person I must say, three belly dancers four performers and the equivalant of four courses. If only we could have stayed a little longer. Will be recomending. A+++

And they call it a turkish restaurant? On a plate you get a piece of uncooked kofte, 1 shish, rice and chips and a bit of salad. Service is shocking/rude. The so called security guard at the door downstairs almost frisk you to see if you have any alcohol on you. Then when you get up and wait to be seated at your booked table, you are asked to settle your bill there before you even order the food. Been there three times for different occasions and refuse to go again.
