We eat yum cha every weekend and always like to try somewhere different. Initially we picked Ru Inn because of the BYO licence with a $4 corkage which is very reasonable compared to most yum cha venues.
The restaurant was very quiet for a yum cha place but it was actually a refreshing change from the noisy hustle and bustle. Spring rolls were a little on the tasteless side but the kids loved them and the sesame prawns. The dumplings were a huge surprise - fresh fresh fresh and great aromatic flavours. Crunchy ginger prawn dumplings, the usual shark fin, seafood, Shanghai chicken, chives, Chinese broccoli, but with flavour that was incredible.
We asked for squid and were offered a rather bland octopus plate which was OK but when we ordered what we actually wanted which was the spicy calamari, we got the best spicy calamari that we have had in years of eating yum cha. Soft, tender, fresh fillets, crumbed with a divine spicy rub of chilli, garlic and onions.
We followed up with the mandatory egg custard tarts which were soft, warm and delicious and a surprisingly good coconut jelly which converted a friend who normally baulks at the jelly plate and is now a convert.
Great attentive service and good prices with yum cha plates at $4, $5 and $6.
