Friend's birthday sat night, she was told they don't do bookings but were assured a week prior that if she arrived at 6.30 she'd get a table for 15 no problem.

When we arrived, the head waiter didn't care about it being her birthday or that we were told we'd get a table. He escorted us to the freezing cold outdoor picnic-style tables where he said we'd have to wait up to 1 hr 20 minutes to get an indoor table. Guests all waited for an hour. Waitress with disgusting attitude dismissed our minor order requests and she clearly didn't want to be working that night as she took it out on us. Appalling.

We finally got indoors right before our meals arrived but were told we couldn't have 2 large tables that had become free so they sent 5 guests to a tiny single table far away. His reason was that our food would arrive shortly and he needed us to sit down. What the?

Hoping the food would make up for the uncaring rude service, alas no. $36 steak ordered by 2 guests came undercooked, medium/well arrived completely pink, full of fat and medium arrived almost raw. Fetta salad by other guests were below par and most meals were not eaten except pizzas.

Our friend's birthday drink, bloody mary was awful she said and when sent back returned worse and given tabasco sauce for her to put in herself! I have no idea why the place was full except that it's a meeting place for try-hard trendys before they go out for the night. Never would go to again.

Just returned from lunch at Royal Saxon, my wife recommended we visit it. Not a nice place to go and eat, there are so many other places which are more enjoyable and better ambience. It has potential, but the way it is going at the moment is most dissapointing.

The place is laid out well, with a nice outside area. We ordered pasta, a main salad, and potatoes (there version of fries). The food, especially the salad was the most disappointing thing I have seen, overpriced and small enough to be a side salad, my wife and I both laughed as it got placed on the table. The pasta, although ok in flavour, was a laughable dish also.

On getting the fries (potatoes), I asked if there was any sauce, the waitress quickly stated that they do not have sauce but only aioli and would I like some......(a pub without sauce, perhaps, a tryhard bar with no sauce....? Something is wrong right there). The aioli had a distinctive bad taste but was ok to wash the chips in.

Upon receiving the bill, (which by the way, was too large for what was received) I noticed that we got charged with $2.50 for aioli, surely this was incorrect so I asked the waitress if this was correct, "yes it is" was her statement.

Not a nice place to go and eat, there are so many other places which are more enjoyable and better ambience. On friday and saturday night the place is not anywhere you would want to visit either, there are so many other places to go to. It has potential, but the way it is going at the moment is most disappointing.

Very expensive for what you get. Average food and limited menu.

Central bar dominates, with enclosed dining on the right and an open drinking zone to the left. Initially cocktails were expertly prepared, but later there was a serious lapse in wine service, with an amontillado and reds served at room temperature on a 36 degree day, and not chilled.

Zucchini flowers, some giant sardines a la plancha and a “pig’s head terrina” were all bereft of any flavour, rarely rescued by any accompanying sauces. An octopus salad was a special, and the highlight of the meal, with thin slivers tossed with flat leaf parsley, oil and capers to proved a substantial course.

Another special of vitello tonnato had an excess of oil and mayonnaise, the mozzarella di bufala had wilted eggplant and red peppers, and a pizza with broccoli, bland ‘Italian’ sausage and gorgonzola was expensive for the price. A last course offered pillow-soft gnocchi, though again the braised lamb shoulder ragu was underseasoned.

Table service was initially very attentive, but fell away in the stifling heat once the restaurant filled. Several attempts at having the air conditioning turned up were fruitless, and the inadequate system needs to be reviewed. Water was promptly topped up. Charging for bread is not a Melbourne practice and should be discouraged.

Lastly, if one has been dining for three hours or so at a restaurant, a simple acknowledgement as you leave is appreciated. Certainly not the Royal send-off we were expecting.
