Just as the River Kwai borders the regions of Thailand and Burma, River Kwai Thai & Burmese Restaurant offers dishes that bridge the equally intriguing Thai and Burmese cuisines. The River Kwai is a fine dining experience that stands out among the more commercial establishments along the busy main road in Clayton.
River Kwai's motto is "Fine Food, Fine Wine, Fine Service, Fine Ambience, Fine Company, Fine Life". They live and breathe this in their refreshing take on Thai and Burmese noodles, curries, salads, soups and vegetarian dishes taken with standard rice or bread. Desserts of Asian fruits and flavours cool down the spices prominent in Thai and Burmese fare.
River Kwai is just right for romantic dinners but can be booked for birthday parties and corporation functions as well.

One of the best Thai restaurants I've been to. Slightly pricey but great for special occasions. Have not yet found a place that makes a better Pad Thai that's just like the recipes in Thailand.

I always used to like this restaurant for its quality until my experience on 30 July 2010. The dishes were served at different times, the taste was not good and we fell ill the next day. Will have to find another Thai restaurant which maintains the quality.

Great restaurant. I rarely eat in these days as they deliver, and we bypass several other restaurants closer. Great curries, pad thai and roti. Love it! Normally order enough for 2 nights meals.

Simply outstanding! I had the burmese chicken curry which was just awesome, the entree of fish cakes were properly done using nice fish and rubbery at all as you find in some Thai places. The battered chicken pieces were light and cooked perfectly and the Thai fried rice done very well. I don't care about the prices which are a bit expensive because you get proper and excellent authentic Thai food. Would go back and will go back as soon as possible!

Excellent restaurant and very worthwhile, especially if you use an Entertainment Book voucher that gives you 25% off. Difficult to get seats without bookings though. Strongly recommend booking first or turning up early in the evening (before 5:30 to 6:00 pm) to secure your spots!

Food is always good quality. Service is friendly, although at times you will have to set yourself on fire to get the waitress's attention. I also felt the draught, so try to sit away from the door. The lighting and decor are delightful. Food sometimes takes a while to arrive.

This restaurant gets a tick for the first criteria, the food we had was lovely. The Burmese beef curry melted in your mouth. Every dish we tried was really nice.
The decor is pleasant. The only slight worry was that the meals are a tad expensive, 18 to 19 dollars, as compared to many Indian places say, where 12 - 15 might be the norm. Overall though a very nice evening was had.

One of the best Thai restaurants I've found in Melb. Delicious food. Interesting to try the Burmese style, but I've found I prefer the Thai dishes after all. Not super cheap Thai, like some places, but reasonably priced and the food is very good. Special deals on some Monday nights I think, may want to call ahead to find out. Highly recommended.

We have finally found our good local thai restaurant that we have been craving for ever since we moved down from Sydney where we had an abundant choice of thai restaurants. River Kwai has a nice atmosphere and has always been very busy, even on weeknights when we have visited!
The menu is typical thai, I have tried the Pad Thai and a number of the curries and all are very good. The entrees also taste as though they are home made. My partner also raves about the roti and peanut sauce. I agree the roti is not the nicest I have tasted but the peanut sauce is very good. The staff are also very friendly and accommodating if you want to turn the heat down on any of your curries (typically I find them spicy but not over the top). River Kwai is also pretty good value for money.

The restaurant was nicely presented, the only drawback was a draft coming in through the front door and we were seated on the closest table to the door. The restaurant was a little noisy, but not so noisy that you couldn’t have a conversation. The Roti was ok, not the best I’ve tasted. The peanut sauce was savory not sweet and tasted like roast peanuts, I enjoyed it but people who used to the sweeter peanut sauce that most restaurants provide, may not be as impressed.
The Thai Green Curry was great, the chicken was tender, it had a nice level of spice, however, it could have been slightly hotter. It was very aromatic with a good amount of Basil. It is not the best green curry I have ever had, but it was very nice. The coconut rice was fantastic, lime leaves and real coconut pieces were cooked in with the rice, which created fantastic flavor.
Unfortunately, one of my favorite dishes, Pad Thai, was disappointing, the ingredients were cooked well, however, it tasted like they had used soya sauce which created a completely different flavour and made it taste more like a Chinese dish than a Thai dish. The service was friendly and attentive. We will be definitely going back for the Monday night tasting night as we did not have a chance to try the Burmese dishes.
