Booked in advance for wifes birthday. Disappointed that it still took 15 minutes to seat us. We went with the all you can eat ($50) yum cha. Did enjoy the food, and wine. Was impressed that they asked us if we wanted extra of any particular dish and it didn't take long for these extras to come out. In the end a nice experience.
We dined at the Red Emperor recently on a Friday night with two visiting friends from New Zealand. We had a table right besides the window with a lovely view over the river and beyond to the city. The service was excellent and couldn't be faulted in any way.
The four of us went for the degustation menu, if it can be called that in a Chinese restaurant (my terminology - not theirs!) The food during the eight courses was for the most part was average with nothing outstanding or indeed memorable. With one bottle of wine and two beers, the bill came in at $254 which is way over the top for Cantonese food in Melbourne.
Whilst we enjoyed the evening, I wouldn't be in a hurry to return, as there is far better value elsewhere along with more imaginative menus and better quality cooking.
I went for Yum Cha today with my 7 months old baby and my wife. My baby still can't sit properly. When booking for a table, we asked for a table with plenty spaces to put the pram. When I got there, they put us upstairs where I had to carry pram and none of the staffs helped us. Terrible!!
Then they offered us All you can eat yum cha for $50 or Ala Carte. We went for Ala Carte. The food is not so special compared to other places. However, this is what disgust me the most. They added more items on the yum cha bill (you know when you go to yum cha, you get a docket where they cross out everytime you order something). I noticed it because I counted the food on the docket before I gave it to them to get the real bill.
Well, we ended up paying $35/person for yum cha. Very expensive compared to other places which is normally $15-$25/person. I guess that is my first and my last visit to the restaurant.
I would have to say I was disappointed with my dining experience there. Perhaps, because with all the awards and so forth I expected more. No doubt the location is brilliant but in most other respects it is no different to dozens of other chinese restaurants I have been to. Hurts when the bill arrives as well. I would have to say "Been there, lets try somewhere else "
We have been quite regular dinners here for the last 12 or so years and have found that each time we have been over the last 12 months Red Emperor has gone downhill a little more each time. The food is very unimaginative at best, we decided to try the Chefs special recommendation entree of chicken and mushroom egg rolls, and these were like chicken Mcnuggets! Absolutely nothing like we expected. Our next course of sesame prawns were very average, the only thing that shinned through was the Peking duck, very tender and tasty.
Rest of our banquet was just OK and the highlight of the night was the waiter spilling a full glass of red all over me! I think it will be a while before we dine here again, much better Chinese to be found in Melbourne.
Update on 22/7/08: OK we were lured back on Sunday afternoon as we felt like Yum Cha. Were seated at 2:30 from the 1:30 sitting (we arrived at 2:10 with no booking, but were happy to wait/shop)
What a disaster, obviously they were in a hurry to get rid of us as many other dinners were onto dessert and we had to keep asking for food which was dealt with "what do you want"! The reason we enjoy Yum Cha is to experience all the different offerings! We asked for one specialty we knew they had only to be told they had run out!
Another expensive lesson on why we are giving this place a wide berth! (Note to self: Please remember!!!) Try ManMo at Docklands, better food, better prices and better view!
Have been there and enjoyed it. Last time the variety wasn't as good seemed to taste all the same. Will give it one more try before moving on to another Yum Cha venue.
A really average restaurant, Red Emperor has really gone down hill over the last couple of years. I used to eat here regularly and loved their dedication to quality produce. However, it's all a bit tired these days. The menu never changes and they never seem to be any specials on offer. The wait-staff always seem to be new with little idea what's going on. The food's fine but much better can be had elsewhere in town.
Went for a special occasion (ANZAC day) with some mates... while it's still a great location & the wine list represents surprisingly good in many areas, the food lacks the special something it had a couple of years ago.
Definitely not what it was at its best - now feels more like a suburban yum cha barn than one of the best in Melbourne. Guess that's why they've dropped a hat this year.
I must say I had a very different experience to the others. Went there for a work lunch and all my colleagues loved the yum cha. I have been there a number of times for dinner too and it was always very nice.
Sloppy, yep they are. Used to be really great but has gone downhill. Staff a bit lack lustre now and hard to justify the prices they are charging. Good views helps ease the pain of the bill. Christine has a good knowledge of the wines, don't ask anyone else if you need help. Wish it was like the old days. Pity
