Our favourite cafe hands down. The food is delicious and affordable, the service is always prompt and cheerful (even when they're packed). The coffee is good and breakfast yummmmm.

A great place with really friendly staff. The cured meat & pate board paired with german-style beer special on tap left us wanting more. Will be back.

I am a semi regular customer, leaving a review because these guys have seriously lifted their game lately. Everything is a bit cheaper than it used to be, and quality and creativity are through the roof. Try the smoked tuna, comes to the smoking, and you get a pleasant coconut aroma while you eat.
and as always the beetroot and gorgonzola arancini, which are bright purple are excellent.

This weekend's 10 course beetroot degustation was amazing! I will never again underestimate how delicious and versatile the humble beetroot can be. A shining example of chef Pat's skills and the ever unique vision of Dave Hynes. Brilliant work you guys. Can't wait for the spring reveal. Thanks for the warm winter hospitality and your passion for all that is wonderful about food. Provenance is a true Melbourne treasure!

Have to say that the review below would be an exception as I visit Provenance for both coffee and meals pretty regularly. There are several reasons for returning time and time again. The coffee is very good, and consistently so. It's also slightly cheaper @ $3 with no charge for soy milk which is rare. The service has always been very friendly too.

Every place you visit makes the odd mistake and it's a shame to hear the reviewer had two poor experiences, but maybe you should give them another go. I only say that because there is an abundance of choice for cafes/restaurants on Smith St but there aren't many places like this that don't have that 'too cool for school' attitude or charge excessively for what are often small portions.

I have been to Provenance twice. The first time they, after 45 minutes informed me they forgot my meal. I should have listened to my self and left it at that, but I decided to give then another crack and guess what? They forgot my meal again. Two from two, unbelievable. Take my advice, if you actually want to eat, go some were else, any were is better than Provenance, as even bad food is better than no food.

We loved this place. First it was breakfast, then dinner, then my partner had her birthday there with a 4 course seafood degustation. Great food and top level service. I can highly recommend it.

I wish the food quality was as good as the service and the recommended wine we received. A mediocre steak with a horrible mashed potato plus a deep-fried dry duck confit are the reasons I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Girls night out, wish we didn't have to drive, the wine recommended was perfect for everyone and the meals were delicious. The palate cleanser was surprising and delightful. Will definitely be back.
