I may have picked out a bad night but if eating at the Post Office don't pick out a night where they have a themed night. Due to have a rather large number of people in who had booked for a special meal we found that the service was really slow, and there were a number of dishes unavailable on the menu.

None the less we plumped for the steak and it was very good. The wine list, however, was fairly overpriced and lack some good value quality wines, which for a gastro pub was a little disappointing. It is a local pub to me but, unfortunately, I've not felt enticed back as a result as there is better value and equally as good pub food around within walking distance.

The Post Office Hotel offers a fine dining experience in Coburg with a menu that is very unusual for a 'Pub' with prices to match. The menu offers limited choice. As we are Fish eating Veggos, there wasn't a great deal of choice at all, so we were limited to one item in the entree section and two in the mains. We had the soft shell crab for entree, with a lovely carrot and anise berry flavoured salad.

The dish was exceptional and I was very sad that I had to share it. We shared two mains. The first was a moghrabieh (big couscous) couscous seafood paella in a smokey broth. The dish was also meant to include chorizo, but we asked for this to be omitted. There were four prawns, two large scampi which had been split and grilled, and two mussels, in a smoked paprika broth, along with some lemons and an unusual herbed vodka sauce.

The dish was very tasty but begged for some warm arabic or turkish bread to mop up the wonderful broth. None was offered. We could have spooned the sooupy broth out of the paella bowl, together, like little pigs at a trough. I think this might be taking 'sharing' too far though. The other main course was vegetarian, a very subtle turnip and veg gratin or slice. My husband was very disappointed with this dish as it had no pronounced flavour and was reminiscent of veggo offerings from the 1970s.

The two dishes didn't complement each other at all, but sadly, we had no other choice. The wine was on the expensive side. We chose a Shelmadine Reisling, at $46.00 (retail price $24.00). The wine was very fine, but we chose from the very bottom of the wine menu, most wines were beyond our budget. The cheapest wine on offer was a Chapel Hill chardonnay ($35.00) which retails at nearby Dan Murphys for around $12.00.

I would like to dine here again, but I think the mark ups on the wines are ridiculous. The lack of bread offering was annoying, and the shared plate concept didn't work for us, given the limited choice and smallish sized meals. We skipped the desserts, went to a nearby middle eastern cake shop instead, and had another nightcap in a 'normal' pub.

I Hated it! I am a veg and they only had one option and the option they had was a plain eggplant thrown into the oven with no spices. The worst thing of all is the arrogant staff (we are in coburg for goodness sake!) I got yelled at because I didn't clearly state my side was an entree! Poor service and there is no value for money in the food! I would highly recommend the turkish restaurant across the road.

I took a friend here for dinner last night after hearing rave reviews about the place and it didn't disappoint. I didn't do my research properly and discovered when we got there that on Sunday, Tuesday nights they only serve food from the bar menu and not the full menu. Luckily the bar menu has some great choices.

I had the green bean tagine with cous cous which was excellent. My friend had the steak which she really enjoyed. We weren't drinking last (she is preggers, I have a cold) so I can't comment on their selection but I would definitely go back here to eat again. Oh, and they were playing great tunes!

What a delight this new addition is to the northern end of Sydney Road. Formerly an "old man's pub", the POH has had a makeover and a change of direction, so that it has a really comfortable bar in the front, an OK beer garden out the back, and a small but cosy dining room in the middle.

The emphasis is on shared eating, and as there was four of us, we had three dishes each from the entree, main and dessert menus, and all were exceptional. Favorites were the garfish and and scollop entrees, the goat and snapper for mains and the hot date donuts and Turkish delight cornettos for dessert.

A small but interesting wine list available (even have Grange on there) and friendly service capped off a great meal. Really quite an exceptional place, which I hope can maintain at this standard. As the dining room is quite small, you will probably need to book.
