Having booked a table nearly one week prior for a Sunday lunch, we were surprised to be seated in a corner of the dining room. You could have been sitting anywhere. Not an ocean glimpse. The pub was busy but surprisingly the food came fairly quickly. It was ok. I always get the impression by those working at the Portsea Hotel that as a guest you are lucky to be there. I find it quite unwelcoming. If you are not sitting on a terrace, it is no better than an RSL dining room. We will not be back.
"When in Portsea got to the Portsea Pub" is the saying and I can understand why, great pub atmosphere with outstanding views from the rear deck overlooking the bay and foreshore area. Normally visit Portsea pub for Xmas Day Luncheon and have never been disappointed. The seafood selection is wonderful as is the range of traditional xmas fare. Lovely way to spend a lazy afternoon in the sun, enjoy the views from the terrace, a fine glass of Mornington Peninsula Wine and a seafood platter, pity I have to drive back to Melbourne at the end of the day. Hooray for Eastlink.
This classic pub is a Portsea institution right on the foreshore. The cavernous dining area at back overlooks the pier and beach, and tables on the verandah or lawn are just the spot on a fine day. Food is a little pricey but a definite class above your usual pub fare, with an excellent seafood selection and a wide choice of other dishes. Packed to the gunwhales over the summer holidays, when it can be hard to get a table, at other times this grand seaside hotel has a more genteel atmosphere.
