I really wanted to give a good review because I love the concept, but the actual experience was unfortunately pretty ordinary.

The service was bad for a quiet Tuesday night. We had a 350g rump steak and a 250g Porterhouse (which I’m sure must have been swapped, because the porterhouse was twice the size of the rump?). The food was dumped on our table with no salt/pepper/condiments or suggestions on where to get them.

The steak was pretty good, medium as requested and had all the makings of a good steak. The chips were a huge disappointment though as they were just your typical thick cut oven chips, rather than the home-made numbers I was imagining.

The bathrooms were very ordinary and in need of a refurb. Generally the decor and feel of the place is good, typical of a pub/brewhouse. It was a little bit on the warm side. The beer was fantastic and made it all worth it. Yum. I’ll go back again, but I’d be hoping for little improvements that can turn an ok place into a great place.

Went to The Portland on a Friday night, no booking. Waited in the very noisy bar (good service and a fireplace) for a table which came up pretty quickly. The waitress who seated us was lovely and very accommodating. My friend ordered the fillet mignon, medium rare and it came out well done. She still pronounced it a good piece of meat and enjoyable despite being brown through.

My partner and I shared The Slab, a 700gm steak, chips and steamed greens. The steak was reasonable, though not brilliant. The sauce (James Squire and .. hrm mustard, I think) was fantastic, though there was not enough. Possibly a soup bowl would not have been enough though. We didn't ask for more but probably should have.

We all shared a dessert of vanilla bean icecream and chocolate fudge brownie. It was excellent and I'd probably go back just to enjoy it again. We used our Entertainment Club vouchers and saved almost $10 each.

The only other thing worth mentioning was how very warm the restaurant was. Lovely for us who had come in out of the cold, and we were seated by the door and hardly felt the wind, but I can't imagine how the staff cope with it.

Had dinner here on a work trip. Really nice decor, wouldn't know it was a pub. Menu is a great pub menu but modern one. Dips for entree were great and James Squire beef pie was yummo!!! Definitely a great place for a huge serving, hearty pub meal.
