This charming and cool little café is located in the middle of conservative Hawthorn. Porgie + Mr. Jones is known as one of the top three breakfast restaurants in Melbourne, serving free range eggs, organic noisette breads and other organic fare. Great breakies aside, Porgie + Mr. Jones also does lunch, dinners and catering. Their catering arm can do 'slow food style' private dinners, cocktail parties in the restaurant's modern spaces or even a luxuriant Jane Austen inspired wedding. Menu for these special events can range from the basic to spectacular.
Friday and Saturday dinners at Porgie + Mr. Jones is a candlelit, intimate experience. The restaurant is reviving the popular BYO style dining Melbourne had in the late '80s/early '90s but substituting the heavy cuisine with home style seasonal dishes. Upstairs is a private dining room for private parties. The ambience at Porgie + Mr. Jones is quite artistic and hip, leaving one the impression that diners don't just accidentally walk in here, but come here with a resolve and knowledge that this is one best cafes in Melbourne.

A fascinating venue with a number of nice areas, including a courtyard. We went for dinner as a member of a group. The dinner deal is that you get 3 courses for a fixed price (apparently cash only), and you BYO wine. There isn't a big range to choose from, but the menu apparently changes regularly and would cover most tastes. Not cheap, but we thought it was worth it so long as you had all 3 courses.
The asparagus entrée and eye fillet were both impressive, and other members of the group were happy with their choices, too. We had drinks beforehand in the courtyard, which set a nice tone for the evening. The service was good all night.

Poorly lit and over crowded. The once thriving meeting point appears to have thrown in the quality towel in exchange for fast money making. After waiting 30 minutes for a take away coffee and a purportedly signature McPorgie, what we received was anything but the quality they exaggerate in their menu. This McPorgie they speak off was no more than a rubber egg and old cheese enveloped in an all but charred English muffin (not to mention the absence of key ingredients mentioned on the menu).
Don’t get me started on the service, Porgies and Mrs. Jones, if you don’t have to don’t waste your time.

We stumbled on this place a few years ago when we lived locally and have been going back ever since (even now we live 25 minutes away) and we've never been let down!

I really like the place. Coffee is ok but the atmosphere is great. They're selling good tea as well.

Great place for breakky/lunch. You can even smell the nice coffee smells a few shops away when you're walking towards it. Seatings are great, there's a big courtyard at the back which is great on a warm and sunny day.
P+MJ is a must try. The "Porgie" tastes good too.

We have been to Porgy and Mr Jones several times for breakfast and each time enjoyed it, so we were extremely interested to see how it transformed at night time for their 3 course $65 dinners. We were so pleased, it really is a wonderful concept to know what you are spending, as you can only BYO.
The food was not groundbreaking cuisine, but was perfectly presented and seasoned and full of flavour. The whole place was dim lighting and candles everywhere, and the older waitress/manager was just a delight. We have now booked their private space upstairs for my wifes 40th, and are really looking forward to it. Highly recommended. A job well done.

Great spot for breakky or lunch, especially on a hot day out in the courtyard. The staff are young and bubbly and made an effort to chat. I can't go past the banana bread topped with yoghurt. I think its the best spot for casual food in the area.

The food was (very) nice, but, unfortunately, our Sunday breakfast experience was a little ruined before we sat down and ordered, with confusion at the door two other tables were seated before us. The food was nice, but attentive service is equally important in my book, and this is where the cafe falls down. A bit disappointing, with a variety of other good breakfast joints in the same area, who needs bad service on a lazy Sunday?

Recently returned for the $65/head 4 course dinner which includes BYO. Space is a little tight, service is attentive. Seasonal menu changes monthly, and caters for the gluten intolerant.
An uncommon issue for me of underseasoning arose several times. The celeriac amuse-bouche needed a touch of salt, as did the gnocchi, which were feather soft but bland, accompanied by too little cheese and balsamic. The "beef bourguignon" was beef cheek with a very mild reduction, shiitake, eschallots and underdone potatoes. My veal cutlet was well crumbed, generous, but again underseasoned.
The rhubarb crumble was excellent, the quince dessert delicious. Very good value, given the dearth of old-fashioned BYOs in Melbourne. I just wish the food had been a little better, as I want these establishments to work.

Contender for best coffee in Melbourne! Wait staff are friendly and efficient. I just wish that not so many people know about it!
