After a taxi drive from hell we fall into PM24 hoping we aren’t too late to enjoy the promise of a calendar rolled goats cheese with grape, a pistachio and parmesan custard, with quail egg and consomme partnered with a Pichot Vouvray Brut 2006, Loire Valley, France – are you kidding me?! Holy Cow’s milk cheese Batman! The flavours are mind blowing!

I dined at PM24 with my wife on an inclement Saturday evening in August. The staff spotted our arrival and had the door open, our coats taken care of instantly and ushered us to our table swiftly.
Our first impression was one of a well oiled machine in operation but the second and more imposing impression was one a high level of noise. The raquette (French noise ho, ho,) prompted a perusal of the restaurant’s interior. It was a sea of diners in an incongruous interior. A long time past the building must have been built for heavy industrial use, possibly armaments manufacture. The columns that support its five or so metre high ceiling have large chunks missing, reminiscent of the trauma fashioned buildings in Sarajevo.
The high ceiling has what look like large flat boxes attached, possibly to act like decorator pieces, in an attempt to modify an otherwise rather stark look. My thoughts turned to the folly in the design of those decorator items, they appeared to have been constructed with no sound absorbing feature in mind. I had booked several weeks in advance but even then was not able to get our preferred six-thirty booking.
We were seated adjacent to the entry to this cavernous place in a corner with a good view of the goings on, but also next to the reception desk that apparently doubles as somewhere to slam down large quantities of cutlery, with no care given to the hearing of anyone in close proximity. This inconsiderate pursuit produced a frequent staccato crashing intensity to the already unpleasant noise level, much to the chagrin of my auditory processing system.
The unpleasant noise level is further exacerbated by the large number of small tables the owners have crammed into the available space. The resultant cheek by jowl effect brings battery hens to mind and was exemplified in the way the hapless but wonderful serving staff had to move around the obstacle course that was the customer crammed interior.
The service of drinks was very slow, but not very surprising, given the work load of the waiters. I have left the issue of food until last because we thought it was nothing very special, and sadly not as one might expect from an establishment with the Philippe Mouchel imprimatur.
My oysters were shucked badly with lots of shell shrapnel, and not near the standard I have had in several restaurants lately. We shared a charcuterie platter that was good, especially the Serrano Jamón, but not special, it needed more and different breads to account for the spreads.
My wife’s King salmon entree was also scored as good and for main course we both had the cassoulet. It was presented in individual cast iron cocottes placed atop a plate that was in turn atop a spirit burner. This precarious arrangement made dealing with the contents quite fraught with a danger of toppling and was actually a waste of effort. We removed the cocottes from the threatening contraption and dealt with the contents at table level and before the spirit burner had imparted any decent heat to the plates still atop the burners.
I thought the cassoulet was fair, my wife otherwise. There appeared to be a noticeable difference in the contents of our individual cocottes. In précis, the stark reality of PM24 is more than the interior. We received no comfort other than the food. Reasonable but not great food in a painfully noisy and cramped establishment, that was not at all expected or in evidence on the web site.
Intimate it ain’t, so not for those wanting a quiet meal I fear. The financial imperative of bums on seats appears to have overruled the heart as well as the misnamed, ‘common sense’.

This is the restaurant we go to time and time again. We went for mother's day and for my birthday, both times with 2 children and the food and staff were amazing!

French food and service to die for. Pricey but worth it and the attention to detail and no problem with any little request to make the meal or evening more enjoyable was a pleasant surprise. We went twice whilst on holiday in Melbourne and are coming back again soon.

Lovely french bistro style food in a beautiful setting. Although a little on the pricey side, the service is spectacular and the meal was delicious. 7/10!
